Most news from Google involves stuff like search ads, web services, mobile computing. The occasional Buzz or Wave, perhaps, that is a little confusing. But at the very least, no matter what Google does, it always involves a computer in some way. Well, not any more. Google has begun investing in wind power. This week, Google agreed to buy 114 megawatts of electricity from an Iowa wind farm.

We heard that and we were all what the—?

Turns out that even though they’re a web company, Google is getting into the energy business, making plans to buy up energy, resell it, and keep the renewable energy credits that go with it. We talk to CNET’s Martin Lamonica about Google’s plans. We also check in with energy industry analyst Sam Jaffe about how this all works.

Not really surprising. Google has always attempted to be a "friendly" company. I believe their mission statement is something along the lines of "do no harm".

Good for them. Out here in California, I think green energy is going to be the next big thing. Irregardless of global warming deniers, the creation of an entirely new market and industry (Green energy) can only be a good thing. I just hope the U.S. doesn't fall behind the E.U., China, or Japan because of reactionary douche bags (read: Glenn Beck, etc,).

Agreed.

We should be building solar cell plants and digging wells for geothermal like there is no tomorrow!

Persian style windturbines wouldn't go amiss either..

Oh and solar vehicles :-)

I've always been fascinated with the idea of controlling the weather -- because if you could bring rain to regions with very little, you could do wonders. What's funny is the meteorologists of the 19th century believed that the weather could be controlled. The only thing we've learned about weather in the last 100 years is that we really know very little about it; when's the last time your weatherman's prediction beyond a few days has been correct? I imagine as computers get better and our data on weather accumulates, we'll be able to predict weather better, but I don't imagine we'll be able to control it any time soon, especially not before understanding how it works.
