Reading on the 9/11 page, it was mentioned that CT-ers didn't have much to go on to "wake up" the masses. I was wondering, what exactly were some of the conspiracies going around in the 1990's-1980's, that fuled today's conspriacy scene?

DJAGNOSTIC,

Just find out what Alex Jones was doing before 911, easiest way is to look at his films he made before this. Aside from alien stuff AJ seems to promote pretty much every conspiracy theory around, so he is a good source if you want to know what CT's people believe in. I'd also cross check with David Icke, just for the addition of the more extreme stuff.

:)

The thing with 911 Truth (and Zeitgeist as a great example), is that it made a lot of previous CT's more accessible to people especially as it happened when the internet was really getting going as mainstream (speeds were increasing to the point where it was easy to stream video). I think this is probably why 2006 saw the most popular time for 911 Truth.

So people who googled for 911 Truth stuff would eventually come across Alex Jones, who would then get into all the CTs he talks about as well. After 911 this stuff was still new to a lot of people, like me! I had never heard about the stuff Zeitgeist talked about in Parts 2 and 3. Others who had been hearing about all the same stuff AJ was going on about for years already knew that 911 Truth was just another in a long line of conspiracy theories so were much less likely to trust them.

Yeah, I remember UFOs were big in the 90s. Also in that era a lot of conservative political theories, such as Vince Foster's "murder," the Clintons hit squad, Hillary's supposed lesbianism, etc.

X-Files was probably a big reason why so many got into UFO belief, since it was massive! I also dabbled in it at one time. I also had a book called UFO's in the Bible (cant remember the exact title but that's what it was about). I was an atheist at the time but felt I was more reasonable than the Christians and more open minded than normal atheists, since I was saying the stories were mostly true, just that it was about UFO and alien encounters. lol. (I was about 14 or 15 don't judge me)

Around the same time I saw the infamous FOX special promoting moon-hoax theory. Guess what, it was narrated by Skinner in X-Files! Instant reason for me to find it more credible than I would have before :D

Ed: Chariots of the Gods by Erich von Daennikan (not sure about the spelling of the last name).

Edward: not sure I'd classify Chariots of the Gods is really a conspiracy theory. It's definitely bullshit, but it's less conspiracy than it is more like plain old garden variety pseudoscience and pseudohistory, essentially a New Age/UFO-themed retake on Velikovsky.

I was guessing the title of the book Ed was talking about

I've read Chariots of the Gods, albeit about 17 years ago.

I googled that and it didn't look like the book I read, so I checked my bookshelf and found it! :)

Its called "Mysterious Visitors" by Brinsley Le Poer Trench, first published in 1973. I checked Google and this Amazon seller has the same cover and everything! :D

I listened to a lot of right wing talk radio when I lived in California in the 1990's. I got a kick from all the guests and callers with bucolic accents who apparently considered Bill Clinton a white trash version of Professor Moriarty.

A fun episode of the Conspiracy Skeptic podcast where they go over the Satanic Panic/Ritual Abuse craze. I greatly enjoyed it.
