Just making conversation, I can demand no more than you.

Whilst I remember, lets see, what else have I done, oh yes, I used to be able to do the rubik cube always under 29 seconds, I quite like that one. (My fastest ever time was 14 seconds, of course nowdays people have done better than that, but that wasn't bad for a few decades ago..)

Anyhow, I was wondering if you had any useful skills that you might care to put to use and help me with my project.

Yeah, I can hook you up an appointment with a psychologist.

No need, I've already made use of those and I don't think there is anything more I can learn from them, but thanks anyhow.

You yourself might benefit from a bit of help, I can recommend:

http://www.juliedeburgh.co.uk

She even does telephone work, I recommend her to all the people I meet who might be in need of a little assistance, as it appears that whilst you are perfectly bright, your social skills leave a little to be desired and could do with some polishing.

It has been lets say, a midly entetaining lunch time. (Why is there nothing even remotely exciting happening in 2,000+ other forums and chat systems. I'm in...)

Try helping yourself. You're too old to be homeless and unemployed and you will never, ever build a solar car.

I thank you for your help though, you have been and I'm sure will continue to be excellent support in my travels through life and my various attempts at projects.

I feel honoured that I'm getting your attention whilst Fresco and PJ are missing out from your input, you really do help to life my spirits a little, knowing that you will be there to point out any errors in my thinking.

It powers the 139 decibel Stebel Nautilus airhorn fitted to the front, which you can see in this photo:

http://www.nanos.org.uk/downloads/cycle.jpg</p>

The horn is activiated by small waterproof buttons on the handlebars, one on each side for convience.

The cycle is also fitted with solid puncture proof tyres as well, and dual scooter wing mirrors.

I may at some point when funds permit, or I can get hold of a free one, add an electric hub, but I'll probably just focus my efforts from now on my new vehicle, rather than add anything more to this one.

Nanos, you seem like a nice guy, but what you do is as close to engineering as TZM is to political change.

My blunt advice:
Visit a local school/university and get a basic booklist on mechanical and electric engineering, maybe you'll even find a comparable list online. Get as many at a public library as possible.

Also, get your hands on some of my favorites for small businesses:
"The E-Myth" to show the difference between running a business, having a job, and looking busy while doing nothing
"No BS Business Success" and "No BS Direct Marketing for Non-Direct Marketing Businesses" for some basic marketing training
"The effective executive" which is just a must-have

Cut your internet connection for a week and get through as many as possible. Or continue being laughed at by people almost half your age.

CJ out.

Thanks, I'll look those up.

> Cut your internet connection for a week and get through as

No real need, before the internet I read myself though some 15,000+ books, which is how come I know a bit about many things.

> Solar powered horn. Oh man, so hilarious.

More or less hilarious than one you need to change the batteries in when they go flat, or one thats powered by pumped air and doesn't last long, or one that you need to plug into a battery charger regularly.

Solar power appears to me to be the best low maintence solution, I'm suprised it doesn't seem the same to you.

What would you suggest as better ?

> what you do is as close to engineering as TZM is to

I'm all ears on how to improve my engineering skills, is there anything in particular that grinds your gears or you see mistakes in ?

> Since he has no parking brake

That the moment that is, but being how the wheels are individually chained, that does double up as a kind of parking brake for all practical purposes.

Ultimately an independant parking brake is a must, along with reverse. (Though I can see going without reverse at first would be practical, and just push the vehicle back with my feet through a hole in the floor.)

I don't understand why it's made of wood and not metal. The stress on the frame with a rider would cause it to snap into pieces if it went over a pothole at a high enough speed. It would also go up in flames if anything seriously went wrong.

Wood is cheaper and easier to work with, normal cars have I imagine a similar risk with all their plstics and fuel on boaard as far as fire goes.

Wood works perfectly well in boats, so why not cars:

> I will just bump this thread every single day until he fucks off.

You do know one of my hobbies is immortality, so the chances are you will be dead of old age before I leave!

Wooden frame cars can last perfectly well, even longer than steel ones, here is an example of a production vehicle with a wooden chassis and wooden bodypanels with a real petrol engine in it:

"Wood works perfectly well in boats, so why not cars:"

because cars are not moving through water... Also, they've really cut back on making boats out of wood, you know. They are made of fiberglass and metals now.

Kinda gotta ask yourself why it is we don't have more wooden, street legal cars. Plastic doesn't ignite like wood does. Get in a crash, wood will not distribute the stress the way metal cars do. It will splinter and snap. People far smarter than anyone here have dealt with this and it was pretty clear then that wood was a bad idea for car production.

> gotta ask yourself why it is we don't have more wooden, street legal cars.

Because metal cars are more easily mass produced in a factory, whilst wooden vehicles are more one offs and in limited production volume, though there have been efforts in that direction in the past:

http://www.oldwoodies.com/feature-africar.htm</p>

> They are made of fiberglass and metals now.

And they don't last so long do they :-)

Wood is more easily adapted, hacked about by the average person with hand tools, an important consideration for customers wishing to retrofit it.

> Plastic doesn't ignite like wood does.

Actually, plastics ignite easier than wood does, wood tends to smoulder and not give off toxic fumes whilst its doing it, plastics on the other hand, those fumes will kill you!

One sees this effect more easily in houses made of wood with just wood in them, compared with houses with plastics in them.

> wood will not distribute the stress the way metal cars do. It will splinter and snap.

I disagree there, whilst you can have a poorly designed vehicle that does indeed do the job badly, you can also have a well designed vehicle with plywood that is more akin to behave like a flexing metal (Only wood has more bounce backness.) when stressed beyond breaking point.

http://www.morgan-motor.co.uk/technical/faq.phtml</p>

> 2. Is it still made with a Wooden chassis?

Who and where ?

As its not at all clear to me, as such I would be interested to see their thoughts/etc. on the subject.

Perhaps one should tell these folks its a bad idea..

http://www.bentrideronline.com/messageboard/showthread.php?t=9934

A nice example here of a wooden velomobile:

http://www.recumbentblog.com/2010/03/31/friend-wood-wooden-velomobile-mkii/</p>

But hey, that is what testing is for!

Now, who wants to don the crash helmet and do 30mph down a hill into the back of a parked car.. ?
