An Army intelligence analyst, arrested in April for allegedly leaking a classified military video of a 2007 U.S. helicopter attack in Baghdad to WikiLeaks, is now facing eight criminal charges in connection with the leak.

Pfc. Bradley Manning was charged Monday with violating the Espionage Act by transmitting classified information to an unauthorized third party. He's also facing criminal charges for abusing access to a secret-level network, and is accused of uploading unauthorized software to the network.

Also, before anyone thinks this dude is a heroic whistleblower, they should read the following article:

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/06/leak/</p>

This wasn't about heroic whistleblowing.

Didn't Obama promise more security for whistleblowers?

He's not a whistleblower. Read the Wired piece too.

If these diplomatic cables exist, I wonder what we'll read in them. Also, I've never heard 'cables' in that context before. I can assume it means 'documented conversation' or something.

Read both articles, I have to say I'm highly skeptical. I am not directly involved with wikileaks and that sort but I know a few people who are back when I was involved in [UR0P] (United Republic of hackers, way before wikileaks came about) some migrated to wikileaks. Now I do not want to sound like a CTer but I'm skeptical for the fact that the articles I read sound to be to good to be true and a bit laughable at some parts. I have read these articles before Matt's post; although I like hearing both sides of the story before coming to my own opinion I've talked to a few individuals who are affiliated or contributors to wikileak who have stated that the guy they arrested isn't the right guy, some had said that it's the government trying to stamp out dissent by doing a fake arrest basically saying if anybody else does this, then this is what will happen to you. When reading both articles I was laughing out loud as I have a strong feeling that it's fake, based on no evidence and with my wikileak friends aside I still think it's a bit BS in all respect.

Aside from that the hacker was noted as saying that the info released he was afraid was really bad for national security. To be honest I've not known a hacker a EX one or one still in his/her field to give a shite about national security per sey granted you have hacktivist such as ones in china who hack websites in the belief that it's for the benefit of all Chinese as they support the Chinese government. I also know if this individual had been contacted by other and had heard other things of what hackers were doing I believe those hackers have done a lot worse things then put up a few videos making the military look bad and it all respect going on this individuals current train of thought should of reported those individuals in as well (unless he has done so already). The only way a hacker would ever reveal someones identity in my opinion of course with a few exceptions is for money, or had cut a deal with authority figures, revenge, or for fame.

I really do not think the information leaked was really bad in threatening national security as no tactical plans or strategies were released. If anything this is a threat on military recruiting, I'd agree with that but do to these economic times I doubt it'll be that big of a threat. The article reads like a army tabloid than a credible news source, as I much respect the military as I was in it, I have to say their are a lot of good and some bad things about the military. I know when their either trying to hide shtite, cover it up, or doing fake discipline action. Unfortunately this article has bullshtite written all over it and if I care to I may go through and quote as well as put my skeptical thoughts as to why it's bullshitte. I don't really care about it though just thought I'd throw up a comment on it.
