I really find the whole 'Black Friday' thing sad more than anything else. Especially when people do this sort of shit and others miss out on holiday time with family. Peace and goodwill towards men...but not when it comes to shopping, for some people. I realize the violence is pretty scattered, though. If there's going to be Black Friday shopping and sales, I at least wish there wouldn't be violence over saving money on gifts. No need to get violent with strangers over getting a gift for friends and family.

Which is why I don't celebrate Christmas anymore. It's become more of a celebration of consumerism.

Black Friday is crazy. I went last year just to do it and I honestly couldn't believe the number of people who were already there. This year too there were people camping out at a mall near my school.

"Which is why I don't celebrate Christmas anymore. It's become more of a celebration of consumerism."

I just read an interesting NPR article that addresses such self-important, pretentious bullshit. It isn't about a celebration of consumerism at all.

http://www.npr.org/2011/11/26/142795937/what-black-friday-crowds-are-really-shopping-for?ps=cprs

Read that and get off your fucking high horse. You're annoying as shit.

An interesting point I'll make.

The people who fight for cheap shit at black friday probably aren't celebrating thanksgiving like they should and/or aren't understanding its meaning.

And I fucking hate how people try to generalize the American public in general as crazed for getting the cheap deal.

(anecdote) My parents are the most penny-pinching I know, and they didn't consider trying to get Black Friday stuff. Probably because thanksgiving is important to our now scattered family. (/anecdote)

Just leave out the gifts, that's what we've been doing.
But then again, I'm European and don't buy as impulsively as y'all Americans. And I totally didn't spent my entire train commute on Friday maniacally browsing my favorite shops for discounts *cough*.

Yeah that's pretty much what my family does now. We usually just get together and have dinner. That and we don't have money to spend lavishly like that.

I can explain it: people pretend they're against consumerism when really they're just too poor to buy presents.

This is why I just get gift cards. Also I hate Chestmas.

Oh ok, sorry about that. I just don't know what Matt's problem is with me saying that. I guess I need to clairify. I don't actually "hate" hate Christmas but I don't really care too much about it anymore. I do feel it has become materialistic over time and it seems to be more about commercialism. That's where I stand on that issue, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the "spirit" of Christmas.
