Wasn't the democracy in Algeria under constant attack from fundamentalists through the early 90s? If democracy didn't stop them, I can't imagine why it would anyone else.

Unfortunately the secular bloody dictatorships were arguably efficient at suppressing extremist groups and religious, ethical and political differences in ME countries don't help either.

One of the things that could happen to extremist groups is like what Hezbollah did in Lebanon and become a legitimate party holding political seats, with the fall of Hosni Mubarak from the Egyptian Government the Muslim Brotherhood has already positioned its members to hold political power in Egypt and probably will do the same in Tunisia and Libya, and those movements tend to push for religious laws and create "democratic" theocracies.

And if a religious centered democratic government seizes power, fighting extremists will be a lot harder than it was with the secular dictatorship due to religious background and idealism (somewhat similar to what Libya was doing), if a secular government takes control and religious political parties with strong extremist influences fail to take control of a sizable share of power and seats will leave too much room for armed conflict and terrorist acts against (or by) religious and/or ethical minorities (Turkey, Somalia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sudan).

Now if something wrong happens like a terrorist attack or sectarian/tribal violence they will somehow link the dots to Israel and USA and blame the jews for everything going wrong, again.

When the people suck, democracy tends to suck.
