As you can see, we've got a new site up. I don't really care whether or not you liked the old one more, that's irrelevant, it was spaghetti code and was maintainable, so I rewrote it from scratch.

What I'd like to know is:

What you think should be changed about this one?
What do you think should be added as a new feature?
Do you have any other ideas for sub-forums?
Anything else you can think of to make the site better/more fun/better to get disinfo out there.

Please be as descriptive as possible, constructive responses only please.

Also please leave messages here, don't email suggestions/ideas to me, don't leave them on IRC or assume I'll read them in the back log of IRC, I won't.

The thing I'd most like to see is a list of ALL our articles and wikis, broken out by category, listed on the main page of the site. The wikis especially--a lot of people have worked hard on those and in my opinion they're tough to find, even if you know what you're looking for.

Also, I don't know if this is possible, but maybe when you click the categories on the bar above (conspiracies, paranormal, health, etc.) you see not only a list of our articles and wikis, but maybe a bar below that shows the latest forum topics posted under those categories.

Also, perhaps a "sites we recommend" feature--where users (or at least admins) can link good debunking or information sites, again under specific categories. Each of us knows some great sites and blogs about various topics, let's build a database of those sites, sort of like our own version of the "Debunkatron."

Get a localized search widget up like the one before. A PM system like the one on the original CS site would be nice.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

kaiser: it would be cool if we could somehow stratify the forum
kaiser: so that there's a section for regulars, and then a section for new posters
kaiser: so we could open up registration, but still require people to be a certain "level" to post in the regular section
kaiser: Im sure Rox doesn't want anymore work, though

WolfBird:that might not actually be a bad idea
CT2012: I agree with that

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
matt: i think it might be fun to have a dmz type forum where people could post without accounts
matt: subforum that is
matt: just restrict their posting to that

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

rox: waitt, what?

CT2012:he's talking about having a section that's not on the front of the CS site where newbies can chat, and then having only regulars posts on the front of the site

CT2012: well basically saying to make a seperate topic only for noobs (I imagine sub topics will be in this topic). Any member wanting to post on the front of the site must be admin approved.

CT2012: from Falkners thinking I imagine it's so if he wanted to he can interact with the CTers without having them spam up the front of the site

CT2012: Rox I think essentially that's what he wants, and I agree with it because most people read the front of the CT site anyways they probably don't delve into older topics unless they have a interest in it

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

In the IRC forgot to mention that kaiser is suggesting of opening up registration again and Matt is suggesting to have a topic where guests can post up just about anything but did not suggest opening up registration.

I think it be a nice idea to have a separate topic away from the front page of this site. I think Ed's idea for the most recent posts to be sort of the front site is so the website could be more dynamic. With such few people joining on the site it makes sense as to why he did it that way. The reason Ed closed registration down was because to many CTer's were coming through and essentially spamming up the front of the site which is mainly for CT debunking. Have a regular group and a guest group is a way to have a open registration and separate the junk from the front of the site.

Matt's idea of a guest posting topic thing sounds interesting as well. The only problem with this is it leaves a big opening for spam bots unless guests are required to use captcha or something on a per post bases. Then after that you have to contend with the crazies who have even easier access to the site. May have to implement different forms of banning these individuals besides IP banning.

If their are a few decent people who come about who may want to debunk in CT's are reasonable enough CT's to discuss with then they may be good enough for an admin to grant them access to post on the front of the site (upon request) and let the rest of the CTers stay in their own topic. The decision on who posts on the front of the site would be left to the regulars.

This may reduce crap topics on the front of the site from the decent ones. Having temporary crazies on the front of the CS site is always nice to have once in awhile until I imagine their access to post on the front site is taken away for obvious reasons. Maybe having open registration up at particular times (like what demonoid.me does) instead of having it up 24/7 may be a good idea as well. Preventing ways individuals could create multiple account such as 1 account per IP and other ways would be good to have down the line.

If it doesn't work we could always go back to how it was or think of another way.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I got some stuff for Rox as well that Rox may want to use for the site. I'll send my stuff in PM. It's stuff I was developing when and if this site made the transition over to the new site.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Going on Muertos topic, maybe have a Media wiki connected into user DB setup where we can post up CT debunks. explain more about a particular thread or as Muertos wants a list of debunking sites. Of course only regulars can post in the wiki but I imagine if we have open registration if somebody were to suggest a debunking site we could post it up their for them if it is good enough.

I see a wiki as more of a archiving and reference thing than anything else. The CS site is dynamic and in this case the wiki would be more of a dumping ground for information that we can reference on the front of the CS site when needed that one may have developed. Wiki is more dynamic in presenting particular types of information than having it as some sort of social networking medium.

Maybe more extensive profiles? On other forums you can put lots of info on user profiles...IM usernames, random favorite stuff, that sort of thing. I sort of liked it. And on profiles, maybe also list contributions to the site, like articles, predictions, etc.

I don't know if this is the thread for bugs, links to other sites in forum posts don't show up as links.

Bill has captured my meaning pretty well. It would be nice to have a place to have cranks post and get some circulation going. Of course, everyone should be able to read all the forums but there would be some forums only open to the veterans to post in (and people who are elevated in levels).

^ I think it would be important to implement active flood gate system like I suggest above if we're going to have open registration.

Do we all have to start as n00bs again now that the forum is new?

I like the idea of having a spot for cranks to post on the forums. In the same fashion as the organization of the new forums, there'd be a spot for crank CT's, crank health, etc.

Invariably though, there's going to be zeitards posting, so they may be an exception depending.

I like the idea, but I don't know if it's a good idea, because there's already so many articles. What I think I want to do is probably list by category our most popular stuff, so there's at least some limitation on what's displayed. Otherwise if we listed everything, the front page would be massive, like timecube.

I forgot about the wiki entries, thanks for reminding me. As far as the forum posts, this is something I was already going to do actually, I just haven't yet.

I'll get to that eventually.
2012 CT
[stuff about registration system]

What we're going to do is have a request form, where people fill out account/profile details, then people who are already members can comment/vote on the person being allowed in. This way I'm not in charge of account creation anymore.
Kaiser, 2012 CT, and Matt
[about DMZ forum]

I guess we can do something like this as far as having new people post, but as far as non-registered people posting, no we're not doing that.
2012 CT
[private messaging]

That'll probably be back eventually, it's not really high on my priority list. I can tell you that when it does come back, it won't be a piece of shit like the last one. And you'll actually be able to see if you've got any new messages, rather than having to check your email or the page itself.

I like the ideas that came up in the chat (at least as Bill reported them).

A two-tier membership system, one for nutbars and other for real people, makes sense to me. Those of us who want to descend from Mt. Olympus and engage with the hoi polloi can do so, while at the same time if you don't want to do that you don't have to be bothered with them. Terrific idea.

I like just about all the ideas floated in this topic. Sounds like we've got some cool stuff coming.

Have something to add. I thought I could adjust to it but really I'm getting to use to it now. I'd like a button that's always around that when I'm done reading a thread I can easily click back to http://skepticproject.com/forum/ this link with ease. I have to do a few clicks before I can get back to that link.

Maybe possibly add that link to the left side on the top where Conspiracies, Paranormal, Health, Science, Politics, and Other (maybe call the link "front site" or maybe "Topic Updates").

I'm not to sure about having a book list for CS but I do think it's ok if a individual within CS to recommend books to people that's ok to do.

To submit a prediction, you need to go through a security image. However, no matter what I do, I can't get the security images to show up in either of my browsers (firefox and safari) and I have a prediction I want to submit. Has this just not been addressed since the site's revamp and the images aren't working yet? Or has it been addressed and my browsers are both incompetent?

So I was clicking around links to see what works/still doesn't work. The IRC link that's in the top right still doesn't work. I think we should make IRC fairly accessible...it might be good way for potential members to chat with regular members and learn more what the site's about. Going the other way, it might be a good way for regular members to learn more about potential members.

I think another good change to make would be enabling users to edit the predictions database...either as a whole, or just predictions the user submits. That way, if some date passes that something is supposed to happen, the user who submitted it can go in and update the prediction's status instead of leaving it to administrators.

An option so that people can modify their posts easier:

Many forums have a sort of options panel for their users where they post, where they can embolden, italicize, put emoticons, change fonts, etc.

One of those would be nice for this forum.

Also, on this page (http://skepticproject.com/blogs/ ) the 'old blog' link just goes to a page that says 'error establishing database connection'. I realize the code for the blog probably needs rewritten, but I think it'd be good for there to be some way to access old blog entries.
