I just decided to get dinner at the cafe around the corner. They have lots of food, good variety, and it's delicious. This is the burger that I got there today:

A beef patty, hollow in the middle. In the hollow middle was chopped bacon, sauteed mushrooms and melted swiss cheese all blended together. The patty was probably 3/4 inch thick, moist, delicious and cooked perfectly. On top of the beef patty was lettuce and tomato. On the top bun was a horseradish-mayonnaise sauce.

It was delicious. You could not do that with veggies alone. I honestly don't know how this place manages to survive in vegan, organic, raw food, gluten-free, pseudoscientific health-fad happy western Mass, but man, I'm glad they do.

hehe. I also cannot give up meat, its just too good.

Having said that I have to say I like going to vegan and vegetarians restaurants. I havent been to a raw food vegan restaurant but would be interested. Im also interested in vegan and vegetarian cookbooks, the raw food ones also fascinate me. Why? Because it requires a lot of imagination, raw food even more so. Some of the raw food chefs are REALLY creative with how they use their limited ingredients and cooking rules. I went to a vegan friends dinner party about a month ago and we had some Indian food, it was SO GOOD, there were so many different flavours I didn't miss the meat at all.

As a counter to that, I also wish I could eat some stuff Epic Meal Time creates... (search on youtube)

If we weren't meant to eat animals, then why are they made out of meat?

Yes, why do pigs make themselves out of delicious bacon if we shouldn't eat them? ;)

Not sure how much this relates to this thread. However, I'm curious of opinions of sustainability. I suppose if we learn to make brainless animal meat cubicle factories we can produce meat in an efficient cost effective way for years, though I wonder about the waste handling. It just seems with booming populations and the amount of space and feed and water to produce meat, at least the larger animals will make larger impact on recourses as time goes on. Eat cow responsibly?

94.6 Percent of U.S. Is Rural Open Space according to the US Census Bureau. We have room for more farms.
Water (not sure if you're aware) doesn't go away after you drink it. It gets 'recycled.'
As for feed, again 94.6 Percent of U.S. is Rural Open Space, we have plenty of room to grow feed for them.

Thanks for replying Jim
I'm not convinced the impact is so minimal, but it's good information.
I found lots of information on the EPA website, you may want to have a look

The reason I'd never become vegan is because meat is good, meat is filling, and most vegans I've seen mix in woo like organic farming which really have nothing at all to do with the concept. Further they're often pasty, unhealthy looking, have frail hair, but bulbous stomachs.

Farming in general (and humanity in general) has a huge effect on the environment, pretending as if abandoning meat farming and setting the precious animals free will make that big of an impact is ridiculous. We'd just have to use that land to plant more soy and corn.

Veganism would be a great switch if we all wanted to be frail, arrogant dicks.

Plus from lyle's link:

The size of the beef industry in the U.S. has declined gradually over the last 15 years. There were 1.0 million beef cow operations in 1986, which had declined to 0.83 million operations in 2000. The numbers of beef cows, however, have remained stable at about 33 million head. The number of cattle produced for meat consumption has also remained steady with 11.9 million on feed in 1992 compared to 11.8 million in 2001.

I was hoping for an increase, but no...

Humans evolved eating meat, now that's all natural. There's no reason other than a purely ideological one to become a vegan, be it animal rights or blind environmentalism (both of which are mixed with anti-capitalism), take your pick.

I think for the first time ever, I fully agree with JimJesus here.

So, just to be clear, my point doesn't have anything to do with Vegans. Probably I shouldn't have posted my idea on this thread. I would be more compelled to respect someone if they saw their eating habits as part of a larger interest in environmental sensitivity. But I don't think vegans feel this way at all, it's about feeling sorry for animals other than human, and generally animals that are close to human size and have fur. On top of that vegan farming is most likely very inefficient compared to modern farms. If one is compelled ethically that sustaining the environment as we see it now for future generations then I think it's reasonable to be skeptical of inefficient farming practices.

Most likely? It takes twice the land for the same yield. I'd be more inclined to think vegans cared if they actually promoted GMOs rather than lied about them.
