![]() Level: 3 CS Original | People who fantasize about wealth tend to display what I call Richie Rich thinking: They focus on the elite classes of goods, services and experiences enough wealth can get you. While you can certainly find those things on the market, they don't illustrate the real advantages of wealth, which I see as: 1. Freedom from worrying about paying for health care and disability care for you and your family. Though even then, rich people's physicians graduate from the same medical schools as the physicians everyone else uses. They don't know secret stuff just for the health care of the rich which they keep from mainstream medicine, as we can see from the fact that rich people die pretty much on schedule, and from the same diseases the rest of us get. In fact, for the most part rich people have to consume the same stuff the rest of us do. As Andy Warhol noted back in the 1970's, the rich can't buy better hot dogs or soft drinks, or watch a scarier version of The Exorcist, than we have access to. 2. Freedom in how you use your time. A rich man doesn't have to work every day at a job he hates, or associate with people he doesn't like or respect. He could just sleep in and go to Fight Club every night if he chooses. 3. Related to 2, rich people have the freedom to live in harmony with their natural cycles. They can sleep when they want, wake up when they want, eat when they want, exercise when they want, and so forth, instead of forcing their bodies through alarms, coffee and energy drinks into a schedule more convenient for their employers' requirements. 4. And probably most importantly, freedom to get you and your family out of harm's way. If you want to see the complete absence of that power, just contemplate places like New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, or Haiti after its earthquake last year.

![]() Level: 6 CS Original | Not only that, but there's a couple advantages of being in business for yourself rather than someone else, and this doesn't just include entrepreneurs, but also some consultants and employees who have positioned themselves to have the freedoms they want. Those who care should know my job, and while it's kinda stressful at times, I do not take unscheduled calls, I don't check email more than once a day (and unsorted mail twice a week) and I don't have to plan my holidays in advance. I never do cold calls nor free presentations, and when I have to negotiate a deal, I always have the freedom to choose the location (if I'm not on the phone) and once a client reaches me, resistance usually is low and the process is quite enjoyable. The industry standard is quite different - at first you call 20 businesses who do not care who you are and only once you said "money" fifteen times they start listening and invite you in for a presentation. You then spend a few hours preparing your pitch, 10-15 minutes making it - all for free - and if you're lucky, you get to haggle over fees and retainers. So while common sense seems to be that in order to get more money, you have to work "harder", my position actually allows me to do more of what I like and less of what I don't. I still have to get more stuff done at the end of the day than the average Joe, but that's a different story.

![]() Ordo Ab Chao. Level: 8 CS Original | On a related note: <THOUGHTFUL TEEN> My parents are working class immigrants (they have degrees, can't speak English well though). I gotta tell ya, they keep the house clean, furnished, and with a luxury here and there, but it fucking sucks for them to work so hard to keep it that way. I personally want a bigger, betta house without having to work 12 hour shifts, and being a specialist doctor or surgeon would satisfy me professionally and in terms of personal economic taste. (current version of dream career) I guess my point here is the financial background you grew up in can really influence and/or motivate you to seek a higher status. </THOUGHTFUL TEEN>

Your anecdotes about your immigrant parents and your desire to not struggle as they have don't really weigh heavy here. " LOGIC FAIL SO HARD WTF. You took what I said out of context. The thread became jovial and lulzy the moment you decided the usage of "derp" was a more worthy tangent to follow rather than continuing the discussion about how one's upbringing can affect how they view their pursuit of financial goals and careers. (which you're still getting wrong when it comes to my particular case, by the way). "Your anecdotes about your immigrant parents and your desire to not struggle as they have don't really weigh heavy here." Oh gee, where the fuck is that tiny violin where I need it? We can run this thread down into the ground with cheap BS and memes if you want. I'm game.
