"Discussions on what human rights really are remind us that we construct meaning in human life, not really find it."

I personally believe honest discussion on human rights and morals can and will lead us to eventually finding meaning in life. I also believe they must include criticism of irrational morals, and dangerous belief systems. I subscribe to Sam Harris's notion that morals are facts about the well being of conscious beings, and that it would be a mistake to think otherwise.

"But Kepp, it comes down to a question of just what Harris wants to prove and if he's proving his point as an honest thinker or not. I don't think he's particularly strong in his arguments for reasons outlined earlier."

I've read all of Harris's books, and I'm a huge fan. I think he is brutally honest, and that's the problem people have with him. Those are my opinions. But I also don't have anywhere near your knowledge on the social sciences, so I'm not sure what else to say except that for now, we can just disagree. :p

One thing I would like to add is that I would never be delusional enough to believe that anyone but an atheist would subscribe to Sam Harris's views. I don't expect reciprocation of his views from the majority of people.

Its not an atheist/ theist thing in my book. The problem I have is really shoddy characterizations of islam and a rather non-rigorous examination of the social phenomena at hand. Im not concerned with his arguments against religion as those are pretty standard, what I'm arguing against is they way he tries to argue Islam is specifically egregious and I'm saying that his approach is really unsatisfactory.

I blame liberal hypersensitivity to Islam for Kaiser's posts in this thread.
