I would. I'm not sure I even consider sociopaths to be human beings.

I could be wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that it's estimated that 1% of the US population is sociopathic. That's about 3 million of those fuckers.

I would agree with this as long as these people were kept alive for doctors to study and research. Possibly one day we may actually be able to develop a conscious or something close to it for these people who lack such abilities.

I do not think it is right to criminalize a mental illness. But I do belive we should instutiallize them.

But you can't really institutionalize someone just for being mentally ill. Unless they have demonstrated dangerous (criminal) behavior. So if you want to see them put away it would have to be criminalized. I'm all for it. And Kepp, I've come across that statistic too. I think the numbers are higher. Some sociopaths are pretty good at faking emotion. Unless they do something violent you might not ever know. A person can do all kinds of rotten things and hurt others without ever becoming violent. But I would say the potential is always there and these types are just walking time bombs.

"You Are 32% Sociopath
From time to time, you may be a bit troubled and a bit too charming for your own good.
It's likely that you're not a sociopath... just quite smart and a bit out of the mainstream!"

32% Of course this is a bullshit 'test', as if a sociopath could answer to most of those questions.

I'm completely opposed to criminalizing sociopathy. I just can't see punishing people for simply "being" something, whether or not they've been caught acting on it. If a sociopath does horrible things, then convict them for those horrible things. But not for simply "being a sociopath".
Would automatically throwing all sociopaths in jail make our streets safer? Probably. But in my opinion, it's not worth it. It would be like tapping everyone's phone, or having automatic curfews in every city, or automatically convicting anyone who is even ACCUSED of a crime. It might cut down on crime in the long run, but we'd be sacrificing our personal liberties. Ben Franklin said something about how those who sacrifice liberty to obtain security deserve neither liberty nor security.

BTW, I'm 20% sociopath per that test.

Only sociopaths liberty is sacrificed in this scenario. Therefore I don't see the relevance of the Franklin quote.

I'm against it, but I'm open for argument.

Are there reliable studies about the correlation between sociopathy and criminality?

If its 100% diagnosable, I wouldn't want to put them in prison, I'd want them to be recipients of aid and treatment. I don't believe people should go to prison for conditions, no matter what their outcomes are. But, we will never live in that world, and that makes our ethical decisions much, much more difficult.

@CJ I think at this point we'd be working on a definition in which sociopathy is presented by criminal behavior. Unless you have an official definition that is otherwise.

"Only sociopaths liberty is sacrificed in this scenario. Therefore I don't see the relevance of the Franklin quote."

I'd say that throwing millions of people in prison whether or not they've actually been convicted of doing anything wrong, simply out of fear that someday they will, certainly qualifies as sacrificing liberty. Just because we aren't doing this for everyone doesn't change that.

If it were criminalized, being a sociopath would then be a crime.

And we'd still be throwing people in prison whether or not they've been convicted of doing anything wrong, out of fear that someday they will. That's definitely sacrificing liberty for security.

What would they be doing wrong? Keep in mind that "being" something and "doing" something are not the same thing.

^ I share this consensus.

I say we treat sociopaths like released convicts.

We watch them, monitor them, and require them by law to regularly be assessed by psychiatrists.
