Anyone over 18 that's a US citizen, has been in the country for a certain amount of time (depends on the state, 10 years for the federal government), and isn't a felon can run and win any political office (except president, which you have to be born in the US to win that one). Anyone can, and often local offices get filled with working class people and small business owner retirees. There are even cases where people that are 18, 19 years old serve on school boards, city councils, as mayor, etc. Bigger offices such as governor, president, state/federal senate and house, take a considerable amount of money to campaign with, which often creates a situation where people have to be decent well off to run, but that doesn't stop working class people from often trying to run anyway. | |||||
