It's a type of non-soil based agriculture where you use a mix of water and plant food, instead of soil. It greatly decreases the chances of disease, plus it's easier to do indoors, which is why it's popular with certain illegal crops. My parents used to mess around with hydroponics for lettuce, tomatoes, and other stuff in their basement, it worked really well.
