These are not new concerns over the safety of nuclear technologies, nor should it be surprising that there have been some rather counter-intuitive practices in the construction and placement of nuclear facilities. This morning, Deutsche Welle ran a story that detailed how there are many facilities, notably one in California, that lie along major fault lines. To not take seriously into consideration the impacts major earthquakes have on these plants would be rather foolish. Now consider that here in Illinois, nuclear engineers and experts have already made it clear that our own plants along areas of relative seismic activity (notably in Moline on the Mississipi River) are unlikely to experience the same kinds of problems that the Fukishima plant is currently experiencing. Local media has been deliberate in broadcasting these conclusions. They have a point in considering the potential dangers of nuclear power sources being in volatile geographic zones, and we should continue to improve of practices in regards to the implementation of nuclear energy. Is there a media overreaction in many cases? certainly- thats how market driven news operates. But is there a valid point amidst all the hysteria? Certainly.

the iaea the japanese government and media have been on this literally 24/7 yet i keep hearing over and over is we're not sure what's really happening and the government should be more forthcoming; especially from bbc which i usually find a good news source.
oreolvrs, if it was built further inland it would also be away from an emergency cooling source, and it wouldn't help them avoid quakes. i live in tokyo and supplies aren't so bad, oh woe is me.

It's a painful lesson about where to build things.

Nothing special here, just the human race advancing, one reaction to catastrophe at a time.
