Hello,

I am an undergraduate student from the University of Chicago. My primary interests lie in the international studies and theory, but I am also heavily influenced in sociology and philosophy. I don't really see the point in treating these as distinctly separate fields.

In my younger years, I had believed in the views put out by Zeitgeist- but then I was diagnosed with an Anxiety disorder- so that should tell you something about where my state of mind was.

Currently, I have no particular interest in debunking Conspiracy Theories, but rather observing the phenomena from a wider perspective. I believe that they may tell us something about the power/individual interations as well as reveal the undercurrents caused by shifiting institutional and relational systems.

In my free time I write short prose and poetry, and I love 1990's punk and emo music.

@Falkner,

Your interest in conspiracy theories is similar to my own. I am fascinated by the personalities behind the theories and the pop culture religions that spring up out of nowhere around them. The drama, the in-fighting, the accusations of who is a pedophile and who is COINTELPRO.

That, to me, is the most interesting part of conspiracy theories.

I'm almost in the same spot like you, I've found debunking extremley tiring, since these people don't listen to you. At all. No matter how good your argument is.
I'm also going to attend more social science classes this year, and also branch out on some anthropology.

Also, which emo bands appeal to you the most?

I've always been fascinated by the pathology of conspiracy theories (and I use that word pathology in the sense of viruses, because they do spread like viruses). Organized deception and con games have also always fascinated me, and as there is a tremendous amount of organized deception in conspiracy movements such as Zeitgeist, it's a pretty natural thing to attract my interest.

Part of it is the "I can't believe people actually believe such stupid things" factor, but I do know they believe them, and I think I understand at least some of the reasons why.

WHY DOES EVERYONE FROM CHICAGO LIKE EMO!?!?!? WHEN WE'VE GOT SOO MANY Pop-PUNK BANDS THAT ARE infity TIMEs BETTER! J/k

I'm pretty much in the same boat as Falkner,Matt, and North. I've find this type of hyper-paranoia, irrational type of thinking and living intresting. Me personally I found out about the 2012 shit when I was in sixth grade (this was 2004 and I was 11 years old...0_0 imagine knowing that shit way back then.) and I guess slowly I've slipped into this world.

In fact, my favorite Conspiracy theory is the New World Order it self. Just by how broad of a topic it is. You've got many different believers on the political, reiligous spectrum that add a certain level of appeal and danger to it.

Welcome!

When Wax Trax! Records closed, I no longer had any use for Chicago's music scene.

Why did the NWO close down Wax Trax? They were spreading the twoof?

Al Jourgensen is actually a pretty idiotic conspiracy theorist.

Probably why he moved to Texas.

Since others have been explaining the motivation behind their interest in CTs, I'll toss mine in. I'm currently fascinated by my own fallibility in discerning poor arguments from good ones. As I type, I have a book on critical thinking in my lap that is helping me learn how to analyze claims and arguments in general. Analysis of conspiracy theories not only taps into my interest in investigating mysteries but also to separate truth from fiction.

That sad part is I'm older than some of my may think. :( But hey, at least I'm realizing my critical thinking skills while I still have some time to develop them. hah

Haha, I remember us talking about that on facebook.
Also, Dave Mustaine is a greasy fuck if we're going to talk about conspirative musicians.

@Northground,

Al is a huge dickhead. Chris Connelly wrote a book about his experiences with the Revolting Cocks, Ministry and the Wax Trax! crew.

Got any good Pop-punk recommendations? I mostly listen to PIX folk nonsense, but I'm always open to new stuff.

Edit: Nothing the JK, I assume none of them will come from Chicago. :P

Chicago death metal was quite a potent force back in the day but not so much anymore.

Anybody remember Broken Hope?

Oh, and to add why I'm interested in them: I just find the whole concept of them intriguing, like many others here. It's interesting to see how die-hard CT'ers will defend their beliefs with all the odds stacked against them, among many other things. It's amazing and annoying at the same time how people will accept anything as the truth while belittling anyone who doesn't agree with them as a sheep who needs to open their mind, etc. I don't actively try to debunk things, but I do enjoy having conversations about these subjects (both with believers and skeptics). I have an Associate's in Sociology, so while not an expert on anything... I know enough to see how ridiculous it is when people ascribe some conspiracy to every form of social construct (like Religion for example).

Thanks for the warm welcome. Its amazing to really see there is a growing interest in viewing the CT phenomena from a slightly wider scope. I love what Ed Winston has done, but its not something I'd be able to really be involved in. Its also becoming a fairly relevant field in mainstream study considering all the recent news concerning anti-government militias and individuals. I'm almost tempted to write my BA on this- but I just love IR way to much.

Bands I like: Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, Jets to Brazil, Mineral, Alkaline Trio, The Lawrence Arms, Jawbox, Leatherface and the Weakerthans.

@Matt, the infighting also got interesting with some NWO groups claiming that Zeitgeist and Acharya S are actually a New Age Religion front for the NWO. At times, it literally feels like an accelerated playing-out of the Religious conflicts in Europe during the late middle ages.

When we get to run around in horsehair wigs and frilly collars and shoot at each other with flintlock muskets, let me know. I'm signing up for that shit!

This is not at all surprising, considering that NWO paranoia originated, in the first place, amongst Christian religious right wingers.

What never ceases to amaze me is how a lot of "New Agers" have gotten drawn into NWO paranoia. This, to me, is as strange as if a bunch of Jews were to believe in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Religious right wing NWO believers have always vilified New Agers as harbingers of the "one world religion" of the Antichrist.

At times, it literally feels like an accelerated playing-out of the Religious conflicts in Europe during the late middle ages.

Indeed it does.

Diane, I swear I've read your exact post before.

Twice!

http://conspiracyscience.com/forums/topic/georgia-guidestones#post-3943

What's really ironic is that, today, lots of "New Age" people have become believers in "Illuminati" grand conspiracy ideology. That's a little like Jews believing in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

http://conspiracyscience.com/forums/topic/zeitgeisters-meet-teabaggers-potential-for-hilarity#post-4766

The only thing that's strange here is New Agers embracing "Illuminati"/"New World Order" claims. That's a little like a bunch of Jews believing in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, given how New Agers are vilified in most versions of "Illuminati" grand conspiracy ideology.
