Of seeing illiterate people saying dumb things about how the "illuminati" and how they rule the mainstream media an blah, blah, blah. Then, every time I explain the FACTS they have the nerve to rage at ME! I officially hate CT's with a passion. That is all.

Stop debating them.

Seriously. Just don't do it. All you do is frustrate yourself and validate their sense of insane persecution.

I understand the difficulty in resisting. I'm not always good at it myself.

The last straw for me was the Daily Paul forum. All you can do is provide credible sources and resources for them to view on their own time.

@aaron They're so thick-headed. No matter how much you show them, they'll always just believe what THEY want to.

You're not going to convince someone to not believe something they want to believe. It doesn't matter whether facts are on your side or not.

I've met a tiny minority of conspiracy theorists who actually listened and was interested in discussion. If that's the case, yeah I will debate with extreme fervor. Unfortunately this almost never happens.

Maybe it's because I'm an immature bastard, but I'd rather mock all this shit than try to debunk it, anyway.

Mockery soothes the hatred AND it's fun.

To be honest, the original reason I converted from CTism was because so many people had refutations for the CT claims. I figured they were probably correct even though I didn't fully research both sides. After I started learning about logic and critical thinking, it came time for me to reject claims that have no evidence. Once that happened, disbelieving CTs became extremely easy.

So, maybe the CTs need to learn about logic? Of course, many of them already understand it, so there has to other factors. Alas, it's really not worth our time unless the CT we're dealing with is connected to our personal lives (family, coworker / boss, RL friend).

Look, some people are fucking crazy. Some people lack the metacognition to have beliefs based on rational, logical ideas.

That's really all there is to it. You can't change them. They'll change on their own or it won't happen at all.

Yeah exactly, and I'm pretty sure a lot of the people I know that believe this trash will never change. It really is sad.

The idea that many of stubborn CTs we deal with have legitimate psychosis is creepy. All that work trying to rationalize with bags of rocks...

If I run into somebody like in that efnet chat room, I feel obligated to stand up for logic and reason. It's hard for me to ignore real-time irrationale.

Once you've given them resources and a few chances, I guess all you can do is be glad you're not one of them anymore. I have family members and friends who believe in bullshit like pseudoscience and alternative medicine. I've given up on them as relevant people in my life. It seems harsh, but I don't see the benefit in surrounding myself with people who are incapable of reasoning.

You could say I'm not old enough to get myself away from people like that in my family. I recently got into a debate with my uncle. He's the kind that believe in the rap illuminati bs. I couldn't even take him seriously, but anyway his biggest piece evidence was some video of jay-z talking about "demonic stuff". Also note that he's about 10 years older than I.

Do you have to talk to your uncle about those things? At some point, you'll get better at ignoring his CT crap.

My main issue used to be the Apollo thing, then I came here and the only CT I ever believed got debunked live in IRC lol. Now my main concern is my mom, it's not really a CT, but she believes that the U.S. has enough oil to support all of our own needs, but that certain political and media groups hide it from us so that people can make money importing foreign oil. I'm all for bashing Mike ruppert but I also believe that America does not have adeqaute oil reserves or the capacity to acquire them domestically (even in Anwar or whatever)to support our countrys' needs. I seem unable to convince her-she's a Glenn Beck groupie too. Any links, suggestions or help?

Well, here's one, TC.

http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4032
http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4100

Brian gives some more info in both those episodes about the state of US oil production and worldwide oil production, as well as some available reserves. And, of course, provides additional sources.

What a lot of people forget regarding this stuff is that there IS true, scientifically sound research going into some alternative energy.

On my own view, I wish the environmental movement would look at things more skeptically and reconsider nuclear power.

You cannot win, when you point out it is in fact corporations that control most of the media through their campaigns they actually agree but start speaking of illuminati behind all the corporations. It is better to ignore these fringe losers, leave them to their Marlboro lights and fat girlfriends.
