Level: 4 CS Original | Some lizards engage in a head-bobbing/push-up contest to resolve territorial disputes instead of fighting. Scientists say this is "ritualized" behavior, to avoid injury between members of the same species. But my hypothesis is that these contests actually ARE fighting, or at least they started out that way before becoming ritualized. My idea is that head-bobbing is actually an attempt to get a dominant attacking position on your enemy. When you rise up, you are in a better position to attack the head and back, so your enemy counters by rising up too, then you go down to get into position to attack the neck, and your enemy follows, and so on and so forth. The lizard that can do it faster or better will probably win the fight, so the other one backs down before any blows are actually exchanged. It's like in mixed martial arts; when someone's got you in an arm bar, you don't wait for them to break your arm before giving up the fight, you tap out immediately. | |||||
