Because our political beliefs lack rational foundations, I suspect the consequences of basing policies on one side's beliefs, instead of the other's, don't make nearly as much difference to our lives as their respective partisans claim. (For example, I've never heard a politician who lost an election say in his concession speech, "You fools! You've doomed us all!")
