I thought prisoners DID pick up garbage by the interstate?

@Snob Goblin

That and state routes. Heck, they even pick up trash by this little bumpy road that branches from the main route.

You really want convicted felons picking up trash on the side of the road? Or being given things that can be used as weapons to cut down kudzu?

Seriously? Maybe you should be the one watching them then. Try not to get murdered.

I've counseled in prisons before. Perhaps your idea of prison comes from HBO's "OZ", but the vast majority of American prisoners are not "dangerous" in the way that you are thinking.

I costs millions of dollars a year to house and feed only a handful of prisoners. All I'm trying to say is that rather than 23 hour lock downs, we could put them to work.

And yes, cutting down kudzu with a machete probably isn't ideal but there's no judgment in brainstorming.

Actually no, it doesn't. My grandfather was the warden of a penitentiary and my father was a career corrections officer. I'm fully aware of what goes on in prisons. Prisons house the shit of society.

I hope the next time you counsel in prison you don't get a cup of shit and piss thrown on you resulting in hepatitis.

Now stick that in your hippie pipe and smoke it, fucker. Pie in the sky day dreams like yours are what get people killed.

Unless prison documentaries show jail gangs and bloody inmates, then the public loses interest.

*Sighs.*

For someone with so much second hand experience with American prisons, I'm not surprised you are so grossly misinformed. And I'm pretty sure you pulled that piss and shit anecdote from the same t.v. series that you get your other information.

Yes, there are terrifying individuals in any max or super max facilities. But like I said, the vast majority of inmates doing a five year sentence aren't going to stab a guard and risk life or the death penalty.

And I'm not a hippie. Ironic, coming from someone who plays with pretty flowers all day.

What did they call them? flower children.

No, I didn't. My father was gassed. Or is that something that only happens in the movies too?

Now go fuck yourself.

Corrections officers have to deal with all the stuff you say only happens in the movies. You're a piece of shit.

@Dragonstar

Those things certainly occur but they're the exception, not the rule.

Some people think anyone doing time is a gang banger, serial killer, or sociopath.

It's naive and silly.

Yeah, I'm lying about my father being gassed. You know this because of your vast experience from sometimes counseling in prisons.

Who am I defending. Yes, I'm against the death penalty but not once have I said inmates should be treated better or let out early. In fact, I've said that we should make them more useful to society. Make them work more, etc.

Man, I hate people like you. Those who see everything in black and white.

"In fact, I've said that we should make them more useful to society."

You cannot make the useless useful. They're removed for a reason. You're suggesting that they be re-integrated into it as part of the work force.

Guess what? Some people are completely fucking worthless. They will never amount to anything good in society. And that is why they are removed from it.

Sure you can. Picking up trash is better than nothing.

Hell, give a death row inmate an extra hour of rec time if he agrees to donate a kidney.

I don't pretend to have the answers like Fresco, Merola, and you.

But doing something with non violent offenders even if it's picking up trash benefits society twofold by not only having them removed from it in the first place but also cleaning it up.

No, it doesn't benefit society. What would benefit society is to pay workers to clean up the trash.

In regards to answers, I don't need to pretend to have any because we already have prisons. They work fine enough. The point of a prison is not to rehabilitate. It is to house those who cannot exist in society. It is to keep the worthless contained and isolated, which is what they deserve.

I never said reintegrated as part of the workforce. That's a stupid and dangerous idea.

I said picking up trash. Make them useful between the time they wake and when it's time for bed. It's as simple as that.

It's not utopian it's utilitarian.

I don't want them useful because I don't believe they can be with an appropriate level of risk vs reward.

I want them housed, contained and completely removed from society.

You're right, nothing he's going to say is going to change my mind. I don't think prisons exist to rehabilitate. I think they exist to contain the dregs of society who are incapable of functioning within it. I don't give a shit if they do nothing but eat and sleep as long as they're contained.

And on that note, I'm going to bed.

I was waiting for ..."by reason of insanity."

I agree though, no death penalty for Jared Loughner. We should put him to work.

Jacking off horses for the rest of his life should suffice.
