I shoot you dead. Level: 9 CS Original | Do you CSers consider the new age spirituality a type of woo? I ask because it's actually something I like and found applying some of it to my own life has actually helped me deal with problems with anxiety and depression, alongside more modern treatment like psychotherapy and taking anti-depressants. The thing about the new age spirituality, or at least some aspects of it, is that it's basically modernized Buddhism, and I think I can say I'm starting to seriously consider calling myself a Buddhist. And on Buddhism itself, I think it's a poorly understood religion/philosophy. I guess I'm asking for your thoughts on this topic(s).

Genuine American Monster Level: 70 CS Original | Buddhism is just religion for people who want to go against the grain. If you want to include spirituality in your life, just find a Unitarian church.

Genuine American Monster Level: 70 CS Original | I think American Buddhists are cheesy as hell. The draw towards Buddhism has much more to do with wanting something different culturally than spiritually.

I shoot you dead. Level: 9 CS Original | I think by and large, in many ways, you might be right. But I think at least for myself, I do want something different spiritually and I think this sort of ties in with it being misunderstood. I have been to various Christian church services and none of them really felt right for me. But I have a large number of books about Buddhism, some by Buddhists and some not, and when it comes down to it, most of it seems more like a philosophy than a religion to me. One of the books I have is about comparing Christ to the Buddha, written a monk by the name of Thich Nhat Hanh, and another one is about Buddhism and how it should embrace science, by the Dalai Lama.

Genuine American Monster Level: 70 CS Original | It sounds like you just need to find a Unitarian church. You can go through entire Unitarian services without hearing God or Jesus mentioned once. No silly rituals required.

I shoot you dead. Level: 9 CS Original | In the books I read, a lot of them make a distinction between monastic Buddhism and Buddhism for lay people, and they say that for lay people, no rituals are really required.

Genuine American Monster Level: 70 CS Original | So by "lay people" they mean "people who want to call themselves Buddhists but are too lazy to do the rituals." Sounds like a great way to sell books.

Level: 3 CS Original | I dont consider it as "woo" as it seems to mainly just be a philosophy and they aren't into any doomsday, apocalyptic bullstinky. Although it could be classed as "New Age" particularly the form practiced by most Westerners. I think alot of the New Age stuff draws influence from some of the Eastern religions/philosophies. I don't believe in any of it myself but it is completely harmless and isn't complete bullstinky like "The Secret" and as far as I know isn't obsessed with Tarot cards and Psychics and so on.

I shoot you dead. Level: 9 CS Original | @NWO Florist Not really. They make it clear, at least to me, that you don't need to do the rituals to be Buddhist. For them, it's really about the core teachings of Buddha than rituals, that being the Four truths and Eightfold path, whatever kind of life you apply them to. @Ez Nope, no tarot cards or 'the Secret' or any of that, at least not in Buddhism.

Level: 3 CS Original | For most westerners it seems to more be a way of life than a religion. You have people calling themselves "Jewish-Buddhists" as well and both religions are pretty different to eachother.

I shoot you dead. Level: 9 CS Original | @NWO Florst Maybe some truth to that, but how else can you make these teachings, believe in them or not, available to people? I won't accept the the internet for the answer, as for something like this, I think a book is a bit more appropriate. That said, I also don't really get any sense that any true Buddhist advocates the full rejection of western culture or anything close to it. They seem a lot like some academics in their criticism of it. @Ez I think that's a pretty accurate assessment.

Genuine American Monster Level: 70 CS Original | "Maybe some truth to that, but how else can you make these teachings, believe in them or not, available to people?" You go to a Buddhist temple and learn the rituals? But that requires effort rather than sitting around in your pajamas reading a book.

I shoot you dead. Level: 9 CS Original | @NWO Florist Okay, that's pretty true, lol. But finding such a thing, at least in the western world, is pretty difficult. And, I actually do go to some spiritual events like meditation circles and music events, at a place near where I work, at least when my schedule allows.

"And, I actually do go to some spiritual events like meditation circles and music events, at a place near where I work, at least when my schedule allows." The difficulty seems to rely on finding the time you want to sacrifice, rather than the availability of it. I think you're full of shit.

I shoot you dead. Level: 9 CS Original | @NWO Florist Fair enough. I am having a ton of trouble articulating myself here. You know, I think I'll just say that reading about it, then applying it to my life where I can, and going to some meditation circles has helped me with some problems I've had in the past. I plan to keep it up so I don't have these problems again. And if I'm lazy, so be it. When it comes to spirituality and religion, I subscribe to 'do/believe in what works for you', and I find this works for me. @Ez I have looked around in my area, actually. There are some, but none within reasonable biking/busing distance (I don't have a car), especially as it's winter. The closest I have within easy access is a general spirituality center right near the Habitat office where I work. But once it's spring, I plan to bike to the nearest one and check it out. Disclaimer: I posted this topic knowing full well I may be mocked for it. I expect it and welcome it.
