So if anyone hasn't figured this out by now, what probably gets me most about CTers is that they claim they will save humanity, but do nothing for their communities. They don't do community gardens, they don't volunteer with charities, they don't tutor kids after school, etc. So I'm curious...what do we poop throwing monkeys do for our communities?

I'm an AmeriCorps with Habitat for Humanity. So my job right now is basically volunteer work...it is paid, but it's pay that's barely above the federal poverty line, so it's JUST enough to get by. So I spend a lot of my time in the office doing volunteer coordination and communications, and on weekends, I'm leading volunteer work parties at one of our builds where we're getting a LEED certification.

Donate to Doctors Without Borders, Nature Conservancy and the NRDC. Also there's something involving families of slain police but I can't remember the name of it.

I donate /at least/ 10% of my income to various charities, I donate most weekends and spare time to soup kitchens, working with a few different local labor unions. I also get involved in community projects to keep people from being kicked out of their homes, I donate a lot of goods to places which provide free diapers and formula to poor mothers, the list goes on. Once any of my kids turn 12 I make sure they get involved too from that point forward, because young people typically don't do anything for their communities.

I don't spend my time protesting, caring about animals, making YouTube videos, signing petitions, worrying about who the next president will be -- because it doesn't really matter that much -- or whining at city council meetings.

I have only been doing charity for a few months, but I was inspired by the assholes on this forum.

I donated to my local toys for tots. I have been buying meal in a box's at my local supermarket when I have extra cash. I also donate food to my local food pantries.

"worrying about who the next president will be"

That's because you already know Obama will be re-elected.

For several years I've helped coach high school students in a civics program called "We The People" whose objective is to increase understanding of the Constitution. The REAL Constitution, that is, not the fake one that CT's believe in.

I donate a substantial chunk of my income to an organization called Marathon Education Partners, which sponsors deserving kids over a 10-year period to save up for college. It's more than just a college savings fund, though, but rather a very long-term, in-depth prepare-for-college program. The student I'm sending, who I've been sponsoring since he was age 9, will be going to college next fall.

I was president of my Kiwanis club and served on the board for 6 years (I'm still involved). Some of the activities our club has done:
~ Blood drive (conservative estimate is our club ALONE saved 21,000 lives)
~ Collecting old eyeglasses for kids in third world countries
~ Salt iodine program, to fight child deformity/paralysis
~ Direct on-the-ground help in Haiti (one of our members spent 6 months in a refugee camp)
~ Key Club sponsoring (high school leadership program)
~ Program to disconnect obsolete drainpipes from houses. This program reduced the wastewater going into the Portland storm drain system by 50% in three years.
~ Meals on Wheels. Our members serve hundreds of meals every week to old, infirm people who would literally starve to death otherwise.
~ Summer camp for disabled children
~ Special summer camp for severe burn victims
~ Huge fundraiser drives (about 5 or 6 per year) for local children's cancer hospital
~ Christmas gift program for homeless kids

I could go on. I venture to say that my charity club does more for people in one week than the Zeitgeist Movement has done in its entire existence.

The only substantial thing TZM has accomplished so far is making Jared Lee Loughner famous.

I pay my taxes so people like VTV can sponge off of people like me and you. I forgot I'll be paying a heck of a lot more in taxes... Since the Zeitgeist Movement advocates not paying taxes at least know just by doing that I'm doing more than they ever will.

I recently cleaned out my pantry and closets. Three bags of clothes to donate to the Salvation Army and 2 boxes of food for the local food bank, less clutter for me. Most people have too much shit, so do this. I also make my kid carry a UNICEF box on Halloween. I also give money.

Don't feel bad Kepp, I've only been doing it for a little while and I too was inspired by the assholes on this forum.

I always do food drives and toy drives during the holidays (even before I came here) but last semester I did tutoring for elementary school kids. Also helped out a few times cleaning up the nature center nearby. I'm in school and don't work, so I don't really have any disposable income to donate on a regular basis or anything like that.

http://www.volunteermatch.org/</p>

I think Edward linked to that site awhile ago, a good place to find local volunteering opportunities.

Well...

I believe I can conclude that we poop throwing monkeys have done, and will continue to do far more for humanity than TZM and other CTers will ever do.

I forgot to mention I donate a hell of a lot of my time fixing farm tractors/maintenance back in my home town as well as dedicate my other time to open source projects such as rep rap and things of that nature. I suppose I donate my time and labor instead of money besides taxes.

This really is the "Things TZM doesn't do" thread.

I mostly donate money, I feel like I'm too busy to donate actual time to causes right now. I hope my father doesn't read this.

"This really is the 'Things TZM doesn't do' thread."

Yeah, I know. It's just one of the things that rubs me the wrong way the worst about TZM and CTers in general.

"Once any of my kids turn 12 I make sure they get involved too from that point forward, because young people typically don't do anything for their communities."

I think this is an awesome idea. If more parents did this with their kids, I bet way fewer of them would fall into the CT world.

I've now worked with the physically disabled, mentally challenged, and cancer patients for close to 7 years. Also people with addiction problems, mostly opiates. Heroin, pain pills and most related. I've been part of rides for the homeless around Cape Cod for the past 3 years. I've also taken part and helped raise money for the special Olympics for 5 years.

I love doing these things, and it's been an amazing experience and wouldn't change a thing. I personally look forward to many more years being involved.
