@ Edward:

Many young people who have no real idea about the violent labor history in the United States will tell you why unions are bad, or perhaps worse, tell you why Austrian Economics is good, but most don't even care enough about that either.

Conservatives could frame that history by portraying the industrialists as the victims of unions' extortion efforts. The violence got so bad that industrialists had to hire private security forces (the Pinkertons) just so they could protect themselves and their property and stay in business.

If the industrialists had given in to the unions' demands, they would have to pass their higher costs onto their customers. So in a way the unions tried to extort a much bigger section of the economy than their immediate employers.

@ Edward
As many as it takes!

@advancedatheist
Just about any group can twist perspectives on a matter to make it fit their own agenda.
Sorta post-modernist, in my opinion.

I can't wait to see how the world will end up with no babyboomers.
It will be quite interesting.

@ babybackribs & Edward:

The Randian framing does have its comic book aspects. But in the real world, many of the highest earning people will just move their livelihoods and assets if the taxes and regulations in their current homes become unreasonable. Tiger Woods, for example, grew up in California, but he didn't have to live there for his golf career and pay California's high state income tax. So he relocated to Florida because that state doesn't levy a tax on personal incomes.

Income taxes are retarded, I don't know why anyone would defend them.
