I was working on a question for the Greenanswers website and got into this topic. Who was first on the summit of Mt. Everest: Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953 (as history records), or George Mallory and Andrew Irvine in 1924?

Mallory and Irvine were killed on their expedition, but there is an open question as to whether they bought the farm on the way up to the summit or on the way back. Mallory's body was discovered 75 years later and there are some clues that suggest he might have made it to the top.

I know Wikipedia's not super reliable but some relevant food-for-thought stuff can be found in these articles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Mallory
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Mount_Everest_Expedition_1924

I'm certainly not proposing that we wipe Hilary and Norgay out of the history books, but personally I think Mallory made it. Just curious what fellow skeptics might think. In the absence of definitive evidence I think we have to stick with Hilary and Norgay, but what do you think?
