CT's or me. Plain and simple choice for my dad.

Saying this as manly as possible, I give my thanks to all you assholes for helping me figure out how to end this shit.

EDIT: I'm SO gonna regret having put this up years from now....

Omni's dad believes in CTs. Omni doesnt like this, and basically told him to knock it off or lose his relationship with his own son.

What's going on with you sil?

Drinking hot chocolate and watching Elf. It's terrible. How about you Falkner?

@Omni: What CT's does your dad believe in? And what was his reaction when you threw down your ultimatum?

There's no reason for an ultimatum. He's your dad. He's entitled to stupid beliefs.

Your job is to roll your eyes and change the subject. Not throw down the gauntlet.

He really is a shining example of crank magnetism.

JFK, 9/11, reptoids and giant hole in the north pole (he only mentioned the last two once though.)

He was pretty cold. He tried changing the subject, outright ignoring me, and saying that he'll also show what's it's like to give an ultimatum or some shit like that.

I made it quite clear repeatedly, and I told him I'd ask from time to time if he's made his decision.

He can be a tin foil-hatter or a father with a typical teenage son. Not both. He's not having fucking both anymore.

Um, fuck that? I don't give a shit if he's entitled. Why? Because he likes to use horrible, and I mean HORRIBLE CT-style logic in his reasoning in just about everything.

I hate to sound like a self indulgent teenager, but I'm getting really fucking tired of it.

Well Omni, I don't know the situation that well obviously. But I'm inclined to agree with Matt (mostly out of fear). I'll use my father as an example, he's into some woo, mostly alternative health stuff with a little bit of moonbattyness thrown in for good measure. We have little spats every now and then, but in his case it's not so bad that it envelopes his whole being.

Does your father merely hold these beliefs or what? Honestly, I would say it's not really a problem until it escalates to something like Kepp's friend, who took his step-kids out of school and makes them watch youtube videos all day. Like I said, I don't know your circumstances... but Matt's route seems like the best way to go for now.

@ Matt

Of course. That's the one lesson I learned.

But I'm sure as hell going to change something I'm really fucking tired of if I can. That's the difference between this and the outside world, IMO.

@ Sil

Lately, just about every time he's made an attempt to talk to me, it's either to talk about woo or to show me some website. I told him I wasn't interested.

Try telling a super-duper hardcore Christian you're not interested in what religious things they have to say, and you'll get an idea of what his reaction was.

Your dad has sacrificed a lot for you. You owe him tolerance. He is not some faceless turd on the Internet.

I still do not see the problem here.

He's sacrificed a lot, yes. That does not excuse him for his crappy, alienating beliefs.

Where does the responsibility lie Omni?

Does it lie with your father to change his beliefs or does it lie with you to learn how to tolerate them?

Think about that.

I think this all depends on just how bad it is and only Omni knows that and how it affects him.

Omni, do your dad's beliefs adversely affect you directly? Or is it that you're just "really fucking tired" of it? Does he hear Alex Jones in his head telling him to beat the shit out of you or something? Because unless he is, you can't write-off a family member just because they annoy you.

Unless they are having some kind of profoundly negative impact on your life, I don't really think it's a fair deal. It also seems like it's kind of impossible to change someone's mind at figurative gunpoint like that.

I have cut off ties to CT'er friends, but family is family. Unless his beliefs are harming you, then just tolerate them.

My sister is a Glenn Beck follower, but I tolerate it.

Oh no, you have to listen to things you don't like.

Compare that with raising a child for 18 years.

You sound beyond spoiled.

Meh. I may be spoiled, but I'm not a brat. Sorry if I really want to indulge in having a non-ct dad so, so badly.

He seems to have taken my decision seriously anyway, we talked on the flight to NYC today.

Problem solved.

Well, I'm a bit late coming to this thread, but here's some more food for thought, Omni: http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4187</p>

Also, have you tried explaining logical fallacies and cognitive biases to him? And maybe how science works and the peer review process and all that.
