"What makes me an ideologue?"

I think Matt was referring to you advocating no respect for religion based on anti-religious ideology. I went that route, and it makes you a shitty person.

I think I've explained myself pretty thoroughly on this point. I don't go around bashing religion. I have very religious friends and family. At most I engage in rational, calm discussion with them about their beliefs. I am very careful not to upset them and not to ruin our relationship. That is respect for our relationship, not respect for religion.

I'm working late and I really need to take a dump.

I'm basically channelling all of the fecal pressure into bullying Domokato.

Don't take it personally.

"Yeah, and its also full of xenophobes and perverts."
Yep, but they're Athiest xenophobes and perverts.
I'll try to post some japanese ct's in the future.
I like the Athiest Experience show. They have folks call in sometimes who are athiest and married to a theist. It's a very difficult situation quite often. Though I think it's normal for people to hold contradictory points of view it looks like a tough stretch to be in close relations to a theist since respect is such an important element in relationships.

Atheism does not make one inherently rational or intelligent. Example: Libertardians, Randroids, Zeitgeisters.

Nor does theism inherently make one irrational or unintelligent.

There are many theists who accept scientific theory, and there are many atheists who don't have a clue how evolution works or what biopoesis is.

duncanlecombrewrote:

"Well I'm Christian, so I suppose I'm a Creationist, "

Only in a loose sense in this case in my opinion. For example, Dr Ken Miller has been an outspoken critic of Creationism and Intelligent Design for years but is also not shy about his religious faith.

So long as you arent promoting Intelligent Design or *actual* Creationism, I wouldn't call you a Creationist.

"Well I'm Christian, so I suppose I'm a Creationist, "

Georges LemaƮtre was a priest and he was the creator of essentially the "big bang theory" you can't get more religious and less creationist than that, in fact he got angry with people who equated stated even with a creator-god. There is a separation of faith and reason.

So Francis Collins. I wonder is if you ask guys such as Lemairte or Collins, "what is your definition of god?" What would they say? I think it's hard to say anything more than, "personal experience" or "can't explain it" Once you make a statement of what god does it's like your mixing what Stephen J Gould called non overlapping magistrates (or something like that). I think in a close relationship with someone it would be hard if you feel need to apply skepticism to extraordinary claims of how god and reality mix and the other does not. I would think often this is a bad mix if it touches on core values people have. Stupid ideas like libertarianism quite often come from unexamined attempts at reason where as religious faith casts reason aside.

Who really cares if someone is being good for secular or non-secular reasons? This world needs all the good deeds it can get.

Question: Does religion's pros negate its cons? And what about other supernatural beliefs?

(sigh) I do know better.

The whole anti-religious ideology is one I do hold, but keep quiet about.
That is, until people at large stop doing good things in the name of religion....

The Catholic Church I used to attend does a lot of charity work...

But their youth group... O.o

Anti-religion ideology is irrational because you ignore the positive things religion does and only focus on the negative.
