A few people discussed this on a different thread. I think this isn't a clear cut case. Here's a video link from Alex Jones which for once didn't make me laugh out loud:

Don't see much reason to be against it.

It's been proven to work, risks are minor, and most countries that oppose it do so on a principle-based reasoning (NEVER put anything in water, even if it's good) and generally offer different options, such as salt with fluoride.

Alex Jones' father is a dentist who does fluoride treatments.

CTs often forget that fluoride naturally occurs in groundwater, so when they praise their well, they don't get that more often their wells have more fluoride than the city water (if any at all).

In the other thread I mentioned I live in Japan and they don't put fluoride in the water over here. And you can definitely see the difference fluoridated water has on dental care. Of course it's not the only reason, people also have a tendency to overbrush and for some reason buy really rough brushes.

So I'm all for fluoridation. The idea that it turns people into mindless drones is pretty ridiculous -- there's a lot less individuality in Japan than in America, for example. And I don't buy the poison or sterility arguments -- again, Japan's got a lower birthrate than America. People over here live longer, but that's because we eat better, walk more, and we have damn good health care, not because the water is fluoride-free.

what about the claim that putting this chemical in water is pretty inprecise in terms of how it is distributed. According to the video link i posted it is recommended that flouridated water should not be used in babies formula. Isn't that enough to raise questions about whether a forced medication regime should be implemented in this way?

btw i do not for a second think flouridisation is an attempt to dumb us down or sterilise us!!

@ cyborg - thanks for that article, really interesting

You shouldn't give babies cow milk until a certain age, or other things, that doesn't mean you should think they automatically aren't good for you. Human babies are one of the most sensitive baby mammals on the planet.

yeah, but the principle of 'contaminating' water with something that is dangerous to babies, necessitating parents to purchase expensive bottled water is questionable. As is the issue of whether this risk is adequately appreciated by most parents.

You do also realize most well water comes with fluoride in it as well? Also fluoridation isn't simply "adding" things, but regulating the amount, which depending on where you are is removing more than adding. There's other things like chlorine in tap water as well that you should worry about giving to a baby.

To be honest, all of my kids drink tap water and their formula came from it, and they aren't slaves ... OR ARE THEY?!

You disagree with me or question me at all or my unscientific story, therefore it's an ad hominem attack, that's how it works right? That's how Peter Joseph, Alex Jones, etc define it.

Worrying about the safety of your tap water is a luxury not many people in the world have because they don't even have running water. Usually its spoiled Euros and Americans who don't have enough real problems to worry about.

hmmm, things don't have to kill you or make you sick to be bad for you in the long run.

I know the evidence does seem to suggest no significant health concerns, but i still struggle with whole thing. We should have a choice what we medicate ourselves with, particularly when my water rates are so damb high!

Your water rates have little to do with fluoridation, last spring I got billed more because the water company claimed we [clients] weren't using /enough/ water, and that happens in places where there is no fluoridation. Why aren't you worried about chlorine in water Jimmy? Your body can benefit from fluoride, but not at all from chlorine, and yet fluoride is what we have to worry about "medicating" ourselves with? There's WAY more chlorine in the water you drink than fluoride (if your city does fluoridation) Are you sure there's not just a tiny, tiny bit of paranoia within you regarding this issue?

Kepp, if it's a well, you're likely already MEDICATING yourself with fluoride, as most ground water has it, often with much higher levels than city tap. Maybe you can tell god or whoever to stop poisoning your well?
