So, lately I've been feeling the urge to not be the overachiever in high school that I usually am. I'm wondering if it has to do with the reputation I have as a nerd and since many of my classes have people who don't give two shits about themselves.

Also, it seems like people think it's a BAD thing to surf Wikipedia, or actually search the internet for information and studies (as in, scientific studies and such) instead of going only by hearsay. Ordinarily, I'd be keeping everything here to myself and not post this on the internet, but lately it's been getting much worse.

It's like people look down upon the idea of someone having a thirst for knowledge.

I'd punch them in the face, but apparently school rules say that's a no-no.

Any ideas on what I should do?

Punch them in the face anyway, so you can hang out at home more and read shit without people bothering you.

No really, who cares? Anyone who gives a damn what you do is a jackass. People like that are the ones who have a major culture shock when they realize that after you graduate (or drop out of) high school, no one gives a mickey mouse fuck about you, the music you listen to, how popular you think you are, etc.

There's an old saying that you learn more the first year you're out of high school than you did the entire time you were there, and that's true. I wouldn't worry about being an overachiever, so long as you have a decent GPA and money (especially money), almost any college will take you.

After you graduate, 99% chance you won't ever see any of these people again, but you can always do like me: look them up on facebook to see how white trash they've become, noting that they spell and act like 12 year olds at nearly 40. It's really funny how many of the hot shots in high school now list "drinking," "mudding," and "being a mom" as interests/hobbies.

Someone really gives a shit you look up stuff on Wikipedia? What a sad fucking life, I'd make sure they know to remind me that if I ever care about what they're doing, to remind me to hang myself because I'm wasting oxygen.

You're really going to tone yourself down, change what you're interested in, just to impress a bunch of people you don't like and/or don't like you? If I had that same attitude, I'd shut down my site and forward it to thezeitgeistmovement.com or Prison Planet.

Back when I was in school, and hell even as an adult, my common phrases for such problems were "Go fuck yourself" and "Kiss my ass."

FUCK no, I'm not toning who I am or changing ANYTHING in the face of people like I mentioned and you describe.

Jesus, I thought I understood that, but the zeitgeist analogy proved me otherwise.

I don't know how most people feel it, but to me it feels like they're muck on my shoes trying to slow me down and drag me down with them, the bastards.

The gist I'm getting is that I shouldn't care, which is good advice.

What if I start actively hating them though?

Knowing how to dance might help you.

For realz: Edward is right, I was kinda the nerdy slob in my school, now I'm making probably double/triple the cash my "fellow" classmates make, and I still have enough time to write a fucking book and hang out with friends in RL and with you pricks online. Life's pretty sweet when you don't waste too much* time thinking about what others think.

*too little time turns you into Merola though, so be careful

If you start hating them, so what? I've never bought into the whole "it's wrong to hate" people crap. I sure hate neo-nazis and other racists a whole lot.

Hate is necessary to love.

High school vanishes the moment you stop and realize that is has no bearing on your life 10 years later.

That is, unless, you have a kid or decide to live in the past.

I'm gonna break from the advice of others slightly and say that being well-liked has some value in life.

You probably don't have to punch them in the face. Talking back is good enough. Of course, if they won't let up then you should fight back. Stand up for yourself, basically. But don't lose your Cool. With a capital C.

Being well liked does have it's values... but you should be well liked by people who like you for yourself. As others have mentioned, you shouldn't change just to impress a bunch of people you don't particularly care for anyways.

Just do what you like and find people who can appreciate that, fuck the rest.

yeah i'm not saying you should try to impress people who don't like you, lol, but i think it's healthy to compromise a little bit for the sake of fitting in and making friends.

Why would you want to fit in with people who go out of their way to make fun of you for doing things like going to Wikipedia? Especially a bunch of high school kids you won't ever see after you graduate. You're essentially compromising your values for impressing others alone, and nothing more. I don't think it is healthy to change yourself to fit in, it's like those kids who came back after summer vacation with a completely different look and tried to act like different people.

If you have to change yourself to make friends, those people weren't really worth having as friends in the first place because they obviously won't accept you for who you are -- and this is all based on the fact that Omni-Science likes to go to Wikipedia, it isn't about Nikes or Adidas. Please tell me what's healthy about that? Changing your views and self to fit in, no i mean "compromise", in order to be accepted, that's how cults are made.

That of course is the extreme of what you said, but it's absolutely horrible advice to suggest he change -- or compromise -- himself, his values, etc in order to fit in. I get emails like that all the time, suggestions that I find "common ground" with TZM so we change "change the world together." Even if we could compromise, why the hell would anyone want to?

We're not talking about beliefs in racist philosophies or anything like that, we're talking about going to Wikipedia and others making fun of you for it. So, is he to stop and pretend not to be interested in other things so they'll stop making fun of him? What's the point of that?

You misunderstand me. But I think I didn't express myself clearly. I wasn't saying he should change how he likes going to Wikipedia nor should he try to make friends with the people who already dislike him (I already said this, btw). I'm saying everyone here is a human being and human beings are social animals. We need each other to survive, thrive, and be happy. So you have to compromise a little bit. That's all

It's great to stick to your principles, but you also have to be practical sometimes.

My advice to him in this situation was to fight back, so I don't know why you think I'm telling him to fold.

The only reason I brought up being well-liked and compromise was because everyone's advice to him seemed to be "fuck anyone who doesn't accept you", and I don't agree with that completely. Sometimes they're right to not accept you. You don't accept racists, do you?

I think from experience all of us can tell you, Omni, that you're on the right track with what you're interested in. So ya, in this case, fuck 'em if they don't like it.

Lets put it this way Omni-Science, I think in times like this all you really need is a good example of what these types of people will turn into and what you may turn into if you go down there path so may I present exhibit "A" VTV AKA Neil Kiernan Stephenson. VTV is what one would call stupid and ignorant and doesn't even qualify to be called intelligent in any contexts. VTV has two children, one legitimately one legitimately that he had while still married to his wife. He has jumped around group to group trying to fit in from the Christian religion, to the ron paul, to wiccan, to larping to venus project. The guy can't hold down a job and is basically refusing to work and is only staying afloat by Zeitgeist donation money but before that the main income winner was his wife working at burger king so burger king money was originally keeping him afloat until they got a divorce. I mean you have to ask yourself Omni-Science do you really want to become him, become a VTV? do you? punk...

If that doesn't motivate you or scare you I'm not sure what will. Honestly each time I see a VTV it motivates me to something I don't want to become it's equal to watching jerry springer or a hobo on the side of the street.

I skipped out on trying to be cool and sociable in high school too, and even though I'm successful now I regret it a little cuz I had to play social catch-up later on. It takes time and effort. If you want to do it, it'll cut into your nerd time. But I suggest you do it. Be a cool nerd. Show people how nerdiness can be cool. Show people nerds can be sociable and smart at the same time. You're just that good. High school is the best time to do it. You can get your social skills going at a point in your life where it's most crucial to have them anyway. And they'll come in handy later in life as well. Especially in college. You want to get laid don't u? :)

Don't want to end up like VTV, do you?

Just keep in mind it's all kinda bullshit in high school. Everyone will realize that when they get out and find out they actually have to do stuff with their lives other than wallow in self-afflicted drama.

@domokato

>> It's great to stick to your principles, but you also have to be practical sometimes.

Well, if your principles make you anti-social, then I imagine it is a good thing to try to change that a bit.

>> If you want to do it, it'll cut into your nerd time. But I suggest you do it. Be a cool nerd.

I had plenty of nerd time and had non-nerd friends as well, you can do both pretty well, but in the end your real friends that are non-nerds, if they make fun of you for shit like reading Wikipedia, then fuck them.

>> You can get your social skills going at a point in your life where it's most crucial to have them anyway.

If you have poor social skills in high school, then it's likely it'll take years for you to recover. The best time to gain social skills is as a child, not as a teenager, which is why most people don't change then, or if they do it's dramatic as hell, and they often end up being white trash or something.

>> You want to get laid don't u? :)

Wikipedia didn't exist when I was in high school, but many other nerdy things did, and I got laid plenty. You just need a girlfriend that puts out, not that hard to find. Some of the nerdiest girls are really nasty in bed, oh snap!
