Muertos, since you're the local historian, can you answer something for me? Is it true that more blacks enslaved people at the beginning of the US than white people?

I'm arguing with some racist on irc who claims it is so; but he told me to google the answer when I asked for evidence.

Is there any credence to blacks enslaving anywhere near the number of whites?

He kept saying, "look, I'm not racist. I just think the majority of blacks are lazy." He also had a strange argument that most of the Mexicans living in poor urban areas are actually illegals, whereas the Mexicans in wealthy areas are the legals who work hard...

When the topic turned to me saying US had 911 coming to them, he said, "I'm offended by that." Then I jumped in about how his whole racist bit made us even, starting the argument that led to this thread.

He was clearly a Republican.

CS, as a black man, and someone who knows a little something about history in the US(as well as Africa), the answer is NO. The answer is NO if you are speaking specifically about the US in general. And that idiot racist is naive as they all are.

However, and sadly, during the slave trade, it is true that many African tribes did sell each other out. Most notably in the west, in places like Mauritania, Senegal, Cape Verde Islands, and Guinea. But it wasn't much different then what many Native American tribes did to eachother when the white settlers wanted land here.

Slavery as practiced by Africans in Africa was qualitatively different than slavery practiced by Europeans against Africans. It was more akin to Roman slavery than anything else (i.e., debt or political/war capture slavery) so far as I know. Certainly was NOT what they call chattel slavery, which is the concept that you actually own the body and life of another person. In fact chattel slavery as an intellectual (and eventually legal and economic) concept didn't exist much before the second half of the 17th century and was practiced nowhere except in the New World.
