HAIL HYDRA Level: 6 CS Original | Glenn Beck is perhaps one of the most moronic (deliberately or otherwise) TV personality of this decade. His essential goal is to cater to right-wing fears about increased government and its ills. This often leads him to make arguments that are easily characitured (see :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JnDY2Gv5YQ). But what is most interesting is Glenn Beck's recent attempt at appearing to be a read and learned individual. He has begun to promote F.A. Hayeks The Road to Serfdom which Beck claims "clearly and logically explained how any form of central government planning eventually leads to serfdom (or servitude) and extinguishes freedom."[1] Now, this is a book most students here have read at some point or another during our general education requirement. The book is read in conjunction with Karl Polanyi's The Great Transformation which offers a wonderful counter argument to Hayek. Now, what is wrong with Hayek's book is that his argument, which is unimaginably simple to access, rests on very fundamentally false axioms about economic and socio-political life. But that's not my point in making this post. What I want to bring up is just how Glenn Beck is demonstrating a problem CTers constantly exhibit: mainly the misconstruing of written works and their importance. Because Hayek describes what Glenn Beck is selling to his viewers (more government is eventually going to lead to the Third Reich) it is of course a brilliant and insightful account of the truth. Perhaps one of the most important things I learned in college, and that one could impart on anyone who is "on the fence" about CTs, is that for every book you read that makes a big claim, you need to read three other books that critique that book. | |||||
