Matt Recently got banned off skeptiod.com for asking Brian Dunning about his request for donations.

Below I have copy/pasted a chat conversation going on in SP facebook group aboput Brian dunning and the ban.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Robert Dobbs

Banned from Brian Dunning's page because I asked him about his requests for donations.

Not very skeptical.

Kyle Fossedal

you so bannable

Tony Costello

He banned you for that?

Robert Dobbs

Yep. Deleted my question and removed my ability to comment anymore.

Tony Costello

Was it on the thread about burning man profits?

Robert Dobbs

Nope.

Robert Dobbs

Didn't hijack any threads. Posted a message asking why Dunning was soliciting donations and asking for people to work for free to produce a for-profit book when Dunning himself has a vast amount of personal wealth.

He deleted the message and banned me.

Tony Costello

Touchy, touchy.

Robert Dobbs

Honestly starting to think movement skepticism is just a gravy train for the celebs.

Irtaza de Alno

Isn't that true for a lot of movements?

Kyle Fossedal

^or anything celebs do? --look at me!

Tony Costello

Bottom line: Be skeptical of skeptics asking for money or free stuff.

Mark Hershberger

Yeah, media figures are out to promote their ideas but also out to make a buck. There's no reason to think it can't happen in skepticism.

Tony Costello

Mark Hershberger

His cookie stuffing scam has come up before here. I think one conclusion was his brand of libertarianism allowed him to rationalize his self-serving actions as a non-crime.

Tony Costello

Also posted for editorial content by SocraticGadfly.

Tony Costello

Can he ban people from posting #@briandunning on Twitter?

Mark Hershberger

How about # briandunningisapussy?

Robert Dobbs

When all that shit with the cookie stuffing was going down, I had posted a link on Dunning's profile to a forum thread on JREF about it. Dunning's response was something along the lines of "I can't comment on this and I won't comment on this."

And I was like uh dude, you're posting in the JREF thread I just linked.

He didn't reply.

Mark Hershberger

Yeah, I'd say he's a touchy bitch.

Mark Hershberger

He stole your memory too. Sad.

Antonio Pedro Bernarda

So, he banned you for asking an inconvenient question? Kinda cranky.

Robert Dobbs

What bothered me most of all wasn't the donations, but that he was looking for volunteers to put the book together. It really makes me wonder how much of the research is actually done by Dunning.

He could have just answered the question. Now he looks like a shady dbag.

Antonio Pedro Bernarda

Ghost writers you mean?

Tony Costello

Blocked on Twitter.

Tony Costello

@tonyrc78 32m
@BrianDunning Do you regularly delete posts and ban members from your Facebook page when they inquire about how you finance books, etc?

Robert Dobbs

See? This dude's shady as fuck.

Antonio Pedro Bernarda

Ouch. Should I post that same question on Skepoit and see what happens to me?

Tony Costello

Pussy. Can't even answer a solid question.

Robert Dobbs

He will delete it and ban you from commenting.

Antonio Pedro Bernarda

Gonna try it

Tony Costello

#briandunning Is a scammer, felon and a fake #Skeptoid

Tony Costello

Tony Costello @tonyrc78 now
#briandunning Don't donate to his books and movies. He won't answer basic funding questions. Just ask him. #Skeptoid

Mark Hershberger

#briandunningisbutthurt

Antonio Pedro Bernarda

Nothing indicating a ban so far and my post is still there.

Mark Hershberger

TheBurger King

I'm not surprised I see people profit off a particular community and at that I don't have a problem but it's good to point out. My Problem like Dobbs is he's making a for profit book for himself without throwing down some coin to the people who would also be helping him out with the research.

I may post something about this on SP.com

Robert Dobbs

He wants the fame and the money but no accountability. Just doesn't work that way.

Antonio Pedro Bernarda

Welp, if this serves as anything, I was not banned for asking the question. Ignored? Yeah.

Robert Dobbs

Dunning had earned $7 million in commissions from eBay over time, the court papers say. When the FBI agents questioned him, "The interview took place at the dining room table in Mr. Dunning's spacious, expensive home," as the FBI later described it.

Kinda dents his credibility a bit

If Dunning can fuck up that badly, it really makes me wonder what other bullshit I've swallowed. Starting to have the same disillusionment with Dunning that I had with P&T and Michael Shermer.

Antonio Pedro Bernarda

Like I´ve said, it raises several holes in his credibility. I was a regular listener of his podcast.

A joy he responds on 9/5/2013

https://www.facebook.com/briandunningfanpage/posts/609944415693805

Brian Dunning
What I enjoy the most about being a >>minor<< Internet celebrity is the attention from haters. It's flattering that people spend their time and energy writing about me on their blogs or wherever -- it's almost all untrue, much of it absurdly so. I get a huge kick out of this. The best of it I read to the family at the dinner table sometimes.

I never stop marveling at how people think they can know the thoughts and motivations of someone they've never met; then they form this image in their mind of their idealized Hated Person, and spend time and energy obsessing over that imaginary person and writing about them. Friends who are fellow minor Internet celebrities tell me they get the same thing.

It's fascinating to watch, and at once both fun and a little bit sad.

Brian Dunning I do delete & block trolls; everyone should. But I still allow myself to enjoy their goofiness.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

SP FB members comments to Dunnings response.

Tom McBride

It IS fascinating to watch.

Pat Russo

What an narcissistic fuckwit.

Mark Hershberger

He must be getting a lot of it lately. I wonder why.

Robert Dobbs

The best of it I read to the family at the dinner table sometimes.

Dude's kind of fucked up.

Robert Dobbs

Also I like how Dunning only responds and reposts really ridiculous criticism, like people accusing him of being a government spy and shit. But he won't respond to pretty mundane questions about project financing.

Robert Dobbs

Uh oh lol.

Guess I'll go to the site and check it out. Hope I remember my password.

Robert Dobbs

Well, that will put a bee in his bonnet.

TheBurger King

Matt did you see Brian's comment? I think it may be in response to what I posted on SP.

"Brian Dunning I do delete & block trolls; everyone should. But I still allow myself to enjoy their goofiness."

Fair enough, Just think he's in his million dollar house eating dinner with his family rehashing what we said about him on SP.com LULZ

He has deleted Antonios comment and probably banned him too from his facebook.

I noticed that Dunning has made a new status update and a comment reply to a question he was asked in comments cracking on about how he loves trolls etc.. he looks to be herding the followers into supporting him, in order to justify his banning and removing comments of people. He even goes so far as claiming people as trolls, after he has deleted peoples comments on his finances on there.

All somewhat convenient misappropriation of the term troll in order to justify his silencing of critics of his finances it seems.

Whatever, he makes very good debunking articles, that each contain verifiable sources, and plus they are 100% free. Besides, Agent Matt probably worded his question in some arrogant way, considering some of the comments I've read from him on this site

(although they can be hilarious)

No doubt about it that Matt probably shot full barrels at Dunning, but deleting ALL comments about his finances and donation questions, no matter from whom or how they are worded should set off the alarms for anyone with a sense of morality.

Also why wouldn't he address them rationally, instead of calling people trolls and deleting all finance questions ?

You have to be able to answer that in honesty if you want to dismiss this.

I agree with Anticultist but I have to say that Agent Matt did not word his question in such a way as to be a attack, at that I think it's a legitimate question to ask Dunning.

I find it interesting he's raising funds to make a book, yet he is in need of volunteers aka free labor for help in doing the research for this book. I do not have a problem with people raising money however this is a for profit book and therefore the help should be paid not free volunteers that do the research that Dunning then profits off of. At that this is a E-book why couldn't he do this for free?

I know Dunning scored a lot through his internet cookie scam at which he probably still thinks he did nothing wrong even though he plead guilty but if he's making money off this then he should at least throw some coin over to the researchers as well.

"Whatever, he makes very good debunking articles, that each contain verifiable sources, and plus they are 100% free."

I would disagree, sure I like references but I would not go directly off what Dunning says and I wouldn't take his word for it either. I find Skeptoid entertaining but not intellectual stimulating and certainty not academic worthy or even remotely so, for instance I disagree with his Skeptiod cast on Fracking which his references were exclusively from fracking websites. Dunnings Skeptoid cast on John Titor was awful I was very disappointed in that one, when he could of made a very entertaining podcast on Titor but instead did zero research and basically said people are dumb who believe in this. I don't believeTtitor is a time traveler but Dunning should of went through the process of research for entertainment value at least.

At that dunning did a Skeptiod cast on conspiracy theorist at which he claimed everybody is a conspiracy theorist at heart which I was disappointed he would set that type of theme up for his podcast but in retrospect based on Dunnings libertarians values it suggested to me that he was trying to grab a piece of the CT market that Alex Jones, William Cooper and David Ike developed over the years.

To respond to Dunning

"I never stop marveling at how people think they can know the thoughts and motivations of someone they've never met; then they form this image in their mind of their idealized Hated Person, and spend time and energy obsessing over that imaginary person and writing about them. Friends who are fellow minor Internet celebrities tell me they get the same thing."

I don't know what goes on in your head Mr. Dunning I am not a mind reader nor is it any of my business what you do in your personal life, however you are a public figure and people have a right to question your finances since after all you plead guilty to your 7 million dollar cookie stuffing scam in a federal court.Mr. Dunning you probably still thinks cookie stuffing isn't wrong, which in short you basically stole money from ebay like a thief, which shows the lack of ethics and Morales you have from a business perspective.

"spend time and energy obsessing over that imaginary person and writing about them."

I'm not obsessing over anything. All my arguments are based on what you have said on any of your public communication mediums. At that as far as I know Mr Dunning you are in fact not a imaginary person so I'm not sure what your getting at but inventing/making up things. I actually have never talked to you directly only listened to your cast and when you banned and blocked somebody I know from SP and I read through everything that happened and that's when I started paying attention.

"Friends who are fellow minor Internet celebrities tell me they get the same thing."

I actually think you blew to much smoke up your own ass Mr. dunning as you self-appointed yourself a minor internet celebrity, I wouldn't even call you a minor celebrity or even close to it lol... o my o my how you have a ego... You're so vain. I didn't even know you had friends Mr. Dunning well then again your form of friendship is more like a business friendship using your friends to try and score more publicity and coin for Skeptoid and then when you are done with them you throw them under the buss if need be.

Brain Dunning
I actually posted this as an honest expression of thought, however it turned out to serve a purpose: it flushed out comments from trolls whom I don't care to have on my page. Blocked 3 so far.

Ok you get your trolls lol... Wait a minute isn't using the term troll ad hominem? Why not address the issues instead of using logical fallacies for the bases of your argument... So how about them finances...

He has deleted all comments that questioned him, even those asking why he was deleting comments. Also he has banned them all from commenting on his page and called them trolls [more than 3 people too], even though they only made a single comment each.

Seems to me Brian Dunning has a serious problem with being shown at fault and is abusing the term troll to serve a purpose, silencing critics.

At best, unethical. At worst, that plus Dunning's incredibly thin-skinned as he can't take questions or criticism. Question everything! Except me, my unethical and illegal business practices, my fraudulant cookie stuffing, my finances, and my decision to recruit volunteers for research. C'mon...you can't pay the researchers a cut of profits from book sales? Can't pay them a small cut from recurring donations?

I've unliked his Facebook page and I'm considering unsubbing from the podcast.

Illegal business practices? I admit, I don't really know much about Dunning the man, I only look at his articles.

Wow... what a shame. It really sucks that he is a greedy asshole. Apart from the fact that this proves that he'll do anything for some money, I wonder if this makes any of his Skeptoid articles any less credible.

I personally don't think so, but I think it is necessary to know that Dunning has an agenda, and that's to make money.

I don't have a problem with someone whose greedy but one of my problems with Dunning is he thinks Cookie stuffing is legitimate way of making money. Yes he may have plead guilty in federal court but the fact that he agreed he committed a particular act and is guilty of the act committed does not mean he himself acknowledge he did something wrong. He never acknowledged that he thinks cookie stuffing is wrong from a ethical standpoint as well as a business standpoint. Matter in fact he actually thinks what he did was right.

I cant read minds, but I think Dunning knows what he did was wrong as he has on several occasions tried to develop better strategies to hide his cookie stuffing implementation. So why develop strategies to hide what you do if you think it's perfectly legal? So my problem with the guy is his ethics mostly which lean toward libertarian scammy money making schemes, to the extent that I have to wonder about the episodes I did listen to and if he's actually getting the facts right or rather he's trying to appeal to a new market base to make some more coin.

This is such a cheap and tacky play.

Sam Harris used it against his critics and lost a bunch of respect. Atheism+ used it and utterly demolished their reputation before they even got started. PZ Myers and Thunderfoot have been doing little else then calling the other side trolls. Both had pretty decent levels of commentary before, now it's all circlejerking.

I agree it is a cheap trick. If someone's telling you "Hey this/what you're doing is wrong/questionable" and your response is "TROLL", you just lose credibility and look like you can't really handle any sort of criticism. It's not like it takes THAT long to address criticism anyways.
