Because they're ignorant of where their beliefs originate. It's the same reason people who aren't anti-semitic believe in "international banking cartel" conspiracy theories, all of which originate from anti-semites.

Roxette is correct.

Also, if you try to show a True Believer the origins of such conspiracy theories, they won't listen because they've invested too much in their belief.

Being of the Christian belief system myself, I continually find myself irritated with these crazy end times/antichrist/coming-war-to-end-all-wars to be pretty non-sensical.

As for the non-Christians themselves...you'll have some people who will believe anything pretty much.

I would argue why anyone believes in it cause it doesn't even fit within a Christian belief system, most of those CT's vaguely follow the book of revelation, but any CT that I heard of have for lack of a better word have "Plot Holes" that would make them BS even when you believe in the bible.

Isn't the Book of Revelations nothing more than an allegory for ancient Rome?

@NWO_Florist

Coming from a Christian, it's difficult for me to see it being anything other than allegory for ancient Rome.

"Isn't the Book of Revelations nothing more than an allegory for ancient Rome?"

I don't personally believe that, however Nero fits the CT's definition of the anti-Christ far better then any of the supposed anti-christs I've heard the CT's talk about (mainly any of the US presidents, any of the popes). I say CT definition of anti-Christ because what they are talking about the correct term would be 'the beast' from the book of revelation, anti-Christ is anybody opposed to Christ, one of the "plot holes" I mentioned earlier, basically whoever came up with the biblical CT in the first place must have just quickly skimmed over the bible. That and Anti-Christ probably sounds more dramatic.

Isn't the mark of the beast just a code for Nero? Isn't that what 666 means?

How can you "not believe" that? Isn't that supported by Biblical scholars?

Well at the time being I don't believe that to be true, I haven't heard of the biblical scholars you speak of, I'm not saying your wrong or anything its just information I have heard of before. I'm not any sort of scholar by any means but seriously about 30 min of bible reading would debunk those crazy biblical CT's. I think its one of those things that people accept as fact without looking to far into it. On the flip side I think evangelists use such CT's in reverse and shoe horn them into fitting with the bible as sort of a way of confirming its authenticity, I just happened to see a late night evangelist program do that the other night. I have a sneaking Suspicion this all must be tied in with th Jehovah's witnesses, their whole thing is they believe we are living in end times, but I can't confirm or deny that theory its just a thought I had.

I find it hilarious how religious people get superstitious, take number 13 and Christians, let alone Friday 13 :-) I tried once explaining to one of them what the church did on one particular Friday 13 but the guy was not convinced.

Speak to most fundamentalist protestants and they'll tell you the same thing. I can't help but believe that is just an obsession for fundamentalists period.

Just pondering which came first the chicken or the egg..............
Did the CT come first and the religious extremest pick it up or the other way around.

I always thought it was funny how they say any day we are all gonna get "Marked" but seriously there would be such a political backlash and resistance to getting "Marked" in this day and age, the only way it would work is if all the Christian-ish religions were an extreme minority on the entire planet.

Well, if I recall Bible lessons correctly, the Rapture happens before that...so I guess that helps set the stage.

Still confusing though...

The most popular rapture beliefs have the rapture before the seven year period in which the anti-christ reigns and marks us. However there are some beliefs that the rapture happens after the seven years or at the mid-way point.

And there are some beliefs that there is no rapture period. IIRC, the rapture is barely mentioned period.

In the end, it make me yell. And when I yell, children cry. So by the transitive properties of association, if multiple biblical theories make me yell, and when I yell children cry, then multiple biblical theories make children cry.

(Yes, I ripped that from someone else.)

I suspect that the christians who fall for this "end times" nonsense really fear that their religion faces its "end times," not humanity in general. Christianity could very well decline and disappear in the coming "Jesus who?" era, and the human species would go on about its business without noticing the absence. Christians just symbolize this disappearance as happening all at once with their rapture fantasy.

BTW, I have to laugh at these pathetic octogenarian rapture-hustlers. Look up "wasted life" in the dictionary, and you'll see photos of Tim LaHaye, Hal Lindsey, Jack Chick and other preachers who've spent decades predicting the imminent arrival of the rapture fairy.

I think alot of those Christian patriot type people go on about losing freedom simply because in this era they and their views are almost completely irrelevant. They talk about going back to the nation's Christian roots but I'm not 100% percent sure what they are advocating with this..? (Repealing the Dream Act for sure).

@advancedatheist

You could be on to something there. The less Christian influence they see, the more they do preach the rapture is upon us and that the Tribulation will begin. Hell, I think someone said that we're in the four-year period that indicates the end-times...something about a war that probably should've already started...

@DragonStar:

Not only that, but the "end times" delusion just rationalizes and perpetuates failure to get out of the trailer park and do something productive with your life. It attracts the same kinds of people as CT's, libertarianism and TZM.
