Specifically the CT involving them ruling the world/trying to create a one world government? I'm sure they weren't accused of anything sinister back when they actually existed (except maybe by the Government of Bavaria). Did CT'ers just pull names out of there asses randomly and accuse them of being part of the CT?

Most likely it was started by religious fanatics, since the Illuminati was created to escape them.

The conspiracy theories that a select few people rule the world isn't anything new, I think it goes all the way back to Sumer. It just comes from a fear of those who are in power. Especially when there's secrecy involved.

I echo the sentiment that it probably started with religious nutters. Why do you think this supposed NWO is Satanic?

I saw discussion of Illuminati conspiracy theories in Gordon Wood's book "Empire of Liberty." (No, Gordon Wood is not a CT, he just talked about the theories existing). Evidently they began in the 1790s and were big enough in American consciousness to play a significant role in Americans' perceptions of the French during the Quasi-War with France in 1798-1800.

It is actually one of the oldest conspiracy theories and goes back to when the Illuminati still existed and were accused of being behind the French Revolution by these guys:

I don't know why CT's continue to focus so much on Europeans and Jews, when the Chinese seem likely to become the dominant power in the 21st Century.

Though, come to think of it, Benjamin Fulford appears on Rense's show every so often to tell his preposterous story about how the Illuminati and a Chinese secret society have gotten into a life-or-death struggle for world control.

Even then, what does this "control" mean beyond the superficial ability to order some people around? The richest man in the world can't control the weather, and if he slips on an icy sidewalk and suffers from head trauma, he could die from that just like a homeless person.

Holy crap. Thanks for linking those, Joe. So in 'modern' times, so to speak, this crap has been around since the 50s/60s.

Guess I should've read the articles a bit more thoroughly instead of a quick scan. Thanks for correcting that, Joe - and also, check your private messages.

Any day now!

I got a kick out of this William Guy Carr guy. He cleams that heard in 1925 about a letter written by Albert Pike that plans three World Wars. But the book in which he brings it up was written in 1955. So I take it that he and other CTers would want us to believe that he he went through the whole lead up to the war and the war itself to tell us the "truth".
